Department Summary

The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,500 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland.

Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA, MS and Ph.D., as well as minors in Media Studies, Science Communication, and Game Studies. Undergraduate majors include Advertising, Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations. The school contributes courses to the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and International Studies, and interdisciplinary minors in Art & Technology and Native American and Indigenous Studies.

The SOJC employs approximately 130 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as over 50 student employees. The School is the second oldest journalism program in the nation, founded in 1916 and the only accredited journalism school in Oregon.

Position Summary

As a Career and Academic Advisor, you play a pivotal role in guiding prospective and current undergraduate SOJC (School of Journalism and Communication) majors and minors through their academic and career journeys. Your responsibilities include assessing students' needs, providing personalized advising on academic and career paths, and connecting them with appropriate support resources on campus. Additionally, you will offer guidance on internship and career exploration options, assist with career materials, and coordinate with faculty for industry-specific advice.

Beyond individual advising, you will contribute to the unit's student success programming, which may involve co-teaching workshops, developing career resources, and managing social media accounts. Collaborating with faculty directors and advisors is essential to support various SOJC programs such as internships and honors programs. You will also participate in orientation advising, campus recruiting events, commencement activities, and undergraduate degree application reviews.

Further, your role entails fulfilling assigned duties such as serving on committees, participating in search committees, and supporting training efforts led by unit directors. Overall, as a Career and Academic Advisor, you play a critical role in supporting student success within the SOJC community.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and two years’ experience providing academic or career advising in college/university setting

OR

• Master’s degree in student services, counseling, or a related field and six months of experience facilitating student services programming and providing academic or career advising for students from diverse backgrounds in a college/university setting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree

• Advising experience in an integrated academic and career office in a college/university setting.

• Advising experience in a professional school/within an academic unit.

• Some experience in utilizing technology for advising purposes (e.g. podcasts, social media platforms, LinkedIn).

• Demonstrated awareness of the CAS Standards that pertain to academic and/or career advising.

• Proficiency in a second language for use in outreach and retention programming.
