Department Summary

The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff, and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community, and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student-centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.

Scheduling and Events Services, a unit of the EMU, facilitates planning and support for non-academic use of University facilities and outdoor space on campus. Scheduling and Events Services provides services and equipment for a wide variety of cultural, educational, and recreational activities, enabling campus and community organizations to produce successful events. The unit is committed to providing a positive environment with knowledgeable and helpful personnel, and relies heavily on student staff to carry out its mission (i.e., dedication to principles of flexibility, clear communication, and excellent customer service). Student learning opportunities include training in a professional demeanor (e.g., time management, contributing as a team member and respectful interactions with colleagues and consumers), scheduling software, planning and organizational skills, problem-solving and adjusting venues to accommodate the diverse values and expectations of consumers. Services are available to student organizations, University departments and programs, and other non-affiliated groups holding events on the UO campus.

Position Summary

The Building Manager reports to the Director of Scheduling and Events Services and is responsible for oversight of various building services during evening and weekend hours, including facility supervision, event and program support, handling complex customer issues, patron safety, emergency response and coordinating with the Event Services and Scheduling Managers to ensure well-managed planning. This position also manages the budget for this component of the unit, as well as the hiring, training, supervision, and discipline management for student staff.

This position will work with several other EMU, campus, and community units to respond to building patron and customer situations and will serve as a liaison between building crews and users, relaying information about schedule changes, extended building hours, and special events.

The Building Manager is the principal professional staff member leading the EMU on weeknights until closing and some weekends.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree OR 3 years experience with coordinating event logistics and building operations.

• Experience with and demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.

• Two years professional experience coordinating work with other entities, stakeholders, or teams (examples could include, but are not limited to, working with vendors, liaising between departments, or building relationships with stakeholders).

• Two years experience supervising or leading the work of staff or volunteers.

• Experience working effectively with students or knowledge of student development.

• Experience supervising students.

• Experience with security protocols and de-escalation.

• Experience with EMS, 7Point Solutions, or similar scheduling software.

• Knowledge of OARS, Lane County, Eugene City fire and electrical codes.

• Experience with first aid, CPR, AED, etc.
