Description of Job

Position duties include:

  • The Chief of Staff & Strategy position serves as a chief advisor to the Secretary of State.

  • The position assists in the facilitation of effective decision-making and execution of day-to-day activities of the agency, including assessing inquiries directed to the Secretary, determining the proper course of action, and delegating to the appropriate individual.

  • The position supervises members of the executive team, including the communications, legislative affairs, executive assistants, and external and public affairs positions.

  • This position leads in the planning and execution of strategic planning and initiatives.

  • As a member of the senior leadership team, the Chief of Staff and Strategy elevates the priorities of the Secretary and serves as a link between the Secretary and others to advance the role and interests of the Department.

  • Coordinates and assists in Department compliance and accountability.

  • Engagement with stakeholders including other departments’ and offices’ leadership teams.

  • This position is non-classified, and is exempt from the rules, procedures, and regulations that govern the State Personnel System.

The successful candidate will:

  • Establish credibility throughout the organization and with external stakeholders as an effective developer of solutions to identified challenges.

  • Support the mission and vision of the Department and provide recommendations that are in alignment with the Department’s strategic vision.

  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the Department.

  • Provide continuous effort to improve operations, streamline processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.

  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among department members that allows for disagreement over ideas, conflict, and expeditious conflict resolution.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • At least three years of experience as a Chief of Staff, or a similar management position.

  • Ten years of professional-level work experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position will be required to undergo a criminal background check.
