Job Summary

Under general supervision, responsible for the coordination of breast care services to include education, counseling, and appropriate referrals for patients undergoing breast imaging and follow-up care. Facilitates interactions and communication with healthcare providers in order to assist patients in receiving timely and appropriate breast healthcare services. Addresses patients' psychosocial needs by teaching self-care skills, providing information, and lending support during illness. Collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare team in tracking patients' responses to treatment and final outcomes through generation of various clinical reports referencing computer databases.

Essential Functions:

Arranges and coordinates patient appointments for follow-up examinations (e.g., stereotactic biopsies, mammogram wire localizations, ultrasound aspirations, core biopsies, and MRI biopsies). (15%) Enter pathology results into Radiology's management information system (RIS). Produce standard and ad-hoc reports from this information system germane to breast imaging. (15%) Perform follow-up telephone calls to patients the morning after their procedure to inquire about his/her status. Ask specific questions to learn about the appearance of the incision site, possible signs of infection or hematoma, level of pain, and to arrange follow-up appointments, when appropriate. Consult with relevant clinicians to assess if prescription antibiotics are indicated. (10%) Explain to patients, in laymen's terms, results from breast imaging studies and pathology reports, and address all questions posed by patients and family members. (10%) Coordinates consultation appointments with specialists while ensuring treating clinicians are informed of specialists' findings. (5%) Obtain brief medical histories from patients who are scheduled for procedures, being alert to conditions that may affect the patient's ability to physically or emotionally tolerate the procedure. Inform technologists and radiologists of special circumstances such as a patient who takes anticoagulant medications, or who is highly anxious. (5%) Arrange appointments for patients to meet with key Denver Health staff who are available to help patients with financial and emotional support, if necessary. (5%) Consults with providers to devise a plan when a patient takes anticoagulant medication and needs a biopsy. Coordinate ordering of laboratory studies prior to when the biopsy is scheduled. (5%) For patients from outside facilities who choose to receive their care at Denver Health: * Obtain outside images, CDs, and reports for the radiologist to review. * Arrange necessary appointments (e.g., mammograms, ultrasounds, breast MRI, surgical and/or radiation oncology appointments). * Personally escort new patients to their breast imaging appointments, when possible. (5%) Meet with or telephone other departments to ensure appropriate scheduling of patients for follow-up care (e.g., consultation appointments) (5%) Answer, on a timely basis, all telephone calls from patients and clinician offices regarding questions related to the spectrum of breast imaging studies offered by Radiology's Breast Imaging Section. (5%) Keep technologists informed of add-on patients to ensure optimal patient throughput. (5%) Provides continuity of care for patients while they are in the Radiology Department, as needed. (5%) Assume responsibility for addressing patient complaints related to Denver Health's bre st imaging services. Tasks will include both performing investigatory work on the complaint as well as personally contacting the patient to initiate service recovery efforts. (5%) Education:

Associate's Degree Completion of a nursing education program that satisfies the licensing requirements of the Colorado State Board of Nursing for Registered Nurses Required Work Experience:

1-3 years Three years of experience in a patient care setting. Required Licenses:

BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated clinical skills in the area of breast disease, breast cancer treatments, and psychosocial impact of disease on recovery, Ability to comprehensively assess patients' physical and psychosocial status.
