Dayton Children's Hospital Outpatient Coder in Dayton, Ohio

Facility:Work From Home - OhioDepartment:HIM - AdministrationSchedule:Full timeHours:40Job Details:Under general supervision of the Coding Manager, the Coding Analyst supports Dayton Children's goals for reimbursement through accurate and timely diagnosis and procedural coding of emergency department, specialty clinic, inpatient, observation, outpatient surgery, and outpatient ancillary. This includes the examination and interpretation of the electronic medical documentation to assign and report the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes for the services provided for clean claim submission.

Department Specific Job Details:

  1. Inpatient Charge Coding
  • Manages the workflow of EPIC ambulatory coding work queues of the electronic medical record

  • Reviews, interprets, and determines appropriate assignment of CPT procedural codes based on the clinical documentation in the EPIC electronic health record using CPT coding classification system

  • Assigns injections, infusions, chemotherapy and other appropriate procedural codes with knowledge and understanding of the coding hierarchy

  • Communicates with the other coders and/or coding manager for chart inconsistencies found

  • Communicates with the analysis deficiency staff for any missing documentation

  • Reviews charge coding as appropriate to determine missing/inappropriate charges

  • Demonstrates knowledge of CPT manual and coding

  • Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate use of CPT modifiers

  1. Observation Charge Coding
  • Manages the workflow of EPIC ambulatory coding work queues of the electronic medical record

  • Reviews, interprets, and determines appropriate assignment of CPT procedural codes based on the clinical documentation in the EPIC electronic health record using CPT coding classification system

  • Assigns injections, infusions, chemotherapy and other appropriate procedural codes with knowledge and understanding of the coding hierarchy

  1. Emergency Department (ED) Diagnosis Coding
  • Manages the workflow of EPIC ED HIM coding work queue in regards to the electronic medical record

  • Reviews, interprets, and determines appropriate assignment of diagnosis and procedural codes based on the clinical documentation in the EPIC electronic health record using ICD-10-CM and CPT coding classification systems

  • Reviews, interprets, and determines appropriate diagnosis and procedural code assignments for paper downtime charts

  • Communicates with the other coders and/or coding manager inconsistencies found

  • Communicates with the analysis deficiency staff for any missing documentation

  • Reviews charge coding as appropriate to determine missing/inappropriate charges

  • Demonstrates knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS manuals and coding

  • Demonstrates knowledge and resolution of NCCI edits

  • Demonstrates knowledge of CPT manual and coding

  • Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate use of CPT modifiers

  1. Department Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintaining and managing remote work schedule in a consistent manner to support the goals of the HIM Department

  • Will identify and report on a personal goal

  • Responsible for personal and team oriented goals

  • Demonstrates initiative for maintaining current knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding instruction and guidelines

  • Follows all hospital written policies and procedures pertaining to position

  • Follows all Health Information Management departmental policies and procedures

  • Demonstrates ability to access Dayton Children's Hospital policies and procedures on the intranet

  1. Customer Service
  • Communicates appropriately with internal and external customers which is not limited to staff and healthcare providers

  • Responds timely to internal and external communication whether patient or staff related

  • Researches, resolves, and/or responds to internal and external customer concerns in a timely manner

  • Performs other duties as assigned

ED and/or Injections and Infusion experience strongly preferred. 1-2 years coding experience strongly preferred. 3-4 years of pediatric coding experience preferred. CCS required. RHIT/RHIA preferred.

Education Requirements:

Associates: Business Administration/Management (Required), Bachelors: Business Administration/Management

Certification/License Requirements:

[Cert] CCA: Certified Coding Associate - American Health Information Management Association, [Cert] CCS: Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management Association
