DEPARTMENT OF NEIGHBORHOODSThe Department of Neighborhoods is a pivotal department within our city government. The Director of the Department of Neighborhoods is responsible for addressing a wide range of issues that impact community neighbors while coordinating support from city departments and empowering community-led flourishing. The director of this department supports approximately 69 employees, has an annual budget of $13,470,428, and serves all neighborhoods in Columbus, Ohio. The mission of the department is to provide City of Columbus residents an opportunity for continued access and improvement of neighborhoods by:

  • Management of city-wide community-based programs

  • Cross-functional innovation, with internal and external partners

  • Community training and development programs

  • Community-centric events and planning

  • Promoting equity in and across city efforts

  • Protecting the rights of residents

  • Serving as a direct link to city services and support

  • Attention and care of all immigrants and refugees

THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Columbus is seeking a collaborative and innovative leader with proven executive leadership experience to serve as the next Director of the Department of Neighborhoods. This position will play a pivotal role in supporting community-focused programming, planning, and events within city neighborhoods, ensuring that the voices of community members are heard and celebrated. The Director will lead a team of dedicated employees with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement, customer service excellence, and community-centered design.

The Director will proactively identify, develop, and advance initiatives, activities, and programs aimed at supporting and uplifting community residents while aligning to enterprise-wide strategic goals. This role requires a thoughtful approach to the administrative, professional, and strategic development of the team, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all residents and driving impactful community change.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

A unique blend of knowledge, skills, and experience will be required for this challenging and rewarding position. The ideal candidate shall possess the following:

  • Experience working with diverse populations and cultures, including immigrant and new-American communities, in a mid-to-large City;

  • Experience working with community-based leaders/liaisons, commissions, advocacy groups, and/or non-profits;

  • Ability to think innovatively on new initiatives and departmental practices.

  • Strong, executive level leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated strategic planning, critical thinking, and analytical skills to propose innovative solutions and implement change with resourcefulness and creativity.

  • Keen understanding of customer-centricity and service excellence.

  • Ability to collaborate with a team of peers on a common goal, while gaining buy-in across departments.

  • Experience in strategic planning.

  • Public speaking skills and superior communication skills, both oral and written, for both internal and external communications.

  • Awareness and understanding of working in a political environment (experience is a plus).

  • The ability to encourage collaborative attitudes and address conflict in an open, positive, and impartial manner.

  • Bilingual or multilingual a plus, though not required.
