Genetic Counselor II - IGM Clinical Laboratory Requisition ID 2024-48747 Category Research Overview The genetic counselor is a licensed health care professional with a specialized graduate degree and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) clinical laboratory genetic counselor serves as a resource for health care providers and clinical laboratory directors in the setting of genomic testing and is responsible for activities related to pre-analytic sample and data curation, phenotype curation, genomic analysis and interpretation, result conveyance, and provider engagement. The clinical laboratory genetic counselor also has responsibilities in providing in-service education to providers regarding genetic testing performed in the laboratory, as well as teaching of students, faculty, and staff. The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Nationwide Children's Hospital is creating a future that uses the latest technological advances to help inform diagnosis, prognosis, and approach to therapies for children, adolescents and adults with cancer and other rare genetic diseases. This position is suited for a board-certified or eligible genetic counselor who is knowledgeable about laboratory methodology, genetic variants and disease, and familiar with online genetic databases. The position is suited for an individual who is collaborative, resourceful, and a passionate problem solver who wants to make an impact in patient care. Experience (3-5 years) is preferred, however new graduates are welcome to apply. Experience and an emphasis in oncology testing and cancer predisposition is desirable. Responsibilities Responsibilities: Assists with the process of pre-analytic data curation by gathering necessary information from submitting physicians and institutions. Gathers information such as indications for study, and medical and family history to provide optimal specimen handling and processing, and to allow accurate interpretation, diagnosis and risk estimations. Communicates test results to referring physicians, nurse practitioners, or other genetic counselors. Serves as a resource for information regarding genetic testing and identification of laboratories for follow-up/send-out testing.
