Case Western Reserve University Police Field Training Officer in Cleveland, Ohio

Job ID 12480 Location Case Main Campus Full/Part Time Full-Time Regular/Temporary Regular Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE Working under general supervision, the Police Field Training Officer (FTO) is responsible for providing training to all newly hired police officers. The FTO will provide general police services, emergency response, answers to calls for service and provide other services in keeping with the mission and values of Case Western Reserve University and the department of Public Safety. The field training officer will also serve as a floating shift officer in charge (OIC) in the absence of the shift sergeant or shift corporal as needed. The field-training officer will exhibit a proactive, service-oriented approach to the provision of community-based policing services to the faculty, staff, students and visitors at Case Western Reserve University. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Conduct daily departmental instruction to the probationary officer. Complete FTO forms as required and submit them to the FTO coordinator. (25%) Provide feedback and rating of the probationary officer and communicate any shortfalls or issues to the FTO coordinator. Insure the probationary officer has all the materials, forms and equipment necessary to perform police functions. Review all reports and forms submitted by the probationary office prior to departmental submission and provide assessment to the probationary officer. (25%) Evaluate the probationary officer while carrying out police services as to their ability to provide customers friendly service. Report to the OIC and FTO coordinator of any misconduct and documents the basis of their concerns. (15%) Make final recommendation to the FTO coordinator on the probationary officer's fitness for permanent appointment. (15%) Perform all the functions of a campus police officer. Observe functions of shift sergeant/corporal in preparation for serving as a shift supervisor when called upon. (10%) Serve as shift officer in charge in the absence of the shift sergeant or shift corporal as needed. (7%) NONESSENTIAL SKILLS Perform other related duties as required. (3%) CONTACTS Department: Frequent contact with departmental staff to exchange information or use and interpret established procedures. University: Frequent contact with university staff and faculty to exchange information or use and interpret established procedures. External: Contact with members of the public are also frequently encountered passing through university property and visiting public venues owned by the university to exchange information or use and interpret established procedures. Routine contact with police, fire and EMS personnel from the cities of Cleveland and Cleveland Heights and University Circle Police Department to exchange information or use and interpret established procedures. Contact with other local, county, state and federal agencies may be required to exchange information or use and interpret established procedures. Students: Frequent contact with university students to exchange information or use and interpret established procedures. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY Supervise assigned probationary officers during their training period, and provide periodic temporary supervisory coverage in the absence of the police sergeant or police corporal. QUALIFICATIONS Experience: 1 year of related experience required. Education/licensing/certifications: High school education required. OPOTA certification required. OPOTA Basic FTO training within 6 months of appointment and maintain certification. Must be 21 years of age at time of application.
