Job ID 12364 Location Case Main Campus Full/Part Time Full-Time Regular/Temporary Regular Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate the engineering work on academic and research endeavors occurring within the Department of Biomedical Engineering by overseeing all aspects relating to the successful operation of all teaching laboratories, and where appropriate providing operational support and troubleshooting during student-based laboratory exercises. This includes both the department's teaching laboratories and research laboratories. The manager will make independent decisions on theory, problems, and method in an attempt to develop new or improved techniques, procedures, or equipment. This will require application of intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles in specialty areas, while maintaining a "can-do" customer/ student/ faculty centered mission. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Oversee research and teaching lab facilities management for BME: Plan, develop, implement, and manage day-to-day operations of the laboratories. This will demand a high level of initiative and the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Advise faculty, students and research staff on the use of the equipment and instrumentation. Consult on the design of experiments as requested. Support and perform laboratory teaching when required and as deemed necessary. (15%) Design and fabricate components required for teaching experiments.Evaluate and advise faculty on computer programs, hardware, "canned" lab experiments required to operate teaching laboratory. (15%) Supervise staff and resources to meet program objectives. Supervise undergraduate students and graduate students functioning as TA's for existing BME teaching labs, and be solely responsible for assigning department laboratory repair and maintenance projects. Administer the security systems for the undergraduate and research laboratories and liaise with Access Services to provide card access for students, faculty and research staff. Advise undergraduate students working on their senior projects using undergraduate laboratory facilities, providing guidance, and leadership on design and fabrication. Specify work schedules and supervise student laboratory assistants. (20%) Manage research laboratory space and equipment. Make sure each research and undergraduate laboratory meets Case standards and safety codes and resolve problems or situations that may occur in these laboratories. Develop, implement, and manage maintenance programs for the research laboratories.Direct engineering repairs, maintenance, and servicing of hardware and instrumentation within both teaching and faculty labs. Advise the department chair in preparing proposals for the acquisition and replacement of research laboratory equipment. Work with outside vendors to develop specifications and obtain quotes for equipment and services. Research prices and advise faculty, students, and staff on the best vendors to use depending on the type of material or service required. Oversee the renovations and set-up of new research laboratory space, including working with outside building contractors and CSE design/renovation leader. Support existing department facilities manager to complete space inventory, equipment inventory, telephone inventory, and maintaining laboratories in BME. (45%) NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Work with the business manager on budget requirements for the development and maintenance of laboratories. (3%) Perform other duties as assigned. (2%) CONTACTS Department: Contact with the department chair to advise and report on laboratory issues. Contact with the Business Manager to coordinate purchases of equipment and supplies. Faculty and research staff - advise on laboratory and experiment planning issues; designing and implementing existing and new laboratory exercises.
