Job Description Summary

The Respiratory Therapy Student will provide therapy and treatment procedures in order to rehabilitate people with pulmonary limitations. They will provide comprehensive care to a variety of people including adult and geriatric patients in an inpatient setting. The student therapist, when supervised by department personnel will be allowed to take part in therapy on our pediatric floor.

Job Description

The Respiratory Therapy Student: Upon completion of training with staff will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Routine respiratory therapy procedures including such as, bronchial hygiene (suctioning ), airway clearance therapy (CPT and Vest Application), and hyperinflation therapy (Cough Assist and Metaneb Application).
  • The administration of medications (oxygen or nebulized medications) must be performed under the supervision of another respiratory therapist.
  • Upon completion of training, the student therapist shall be allowed to apply monitoring and recording devices used to monitor patient\'s oxygen saturation as well as carbon dioxide level.
  • Proper documentation of administered services in the patients electronic record Following manufacturer, respiratory department and infection control guidelines replace and label patient disposable equipment.
  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned following proper training by department personnel.

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to the Respiratory Manager

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Second year student in an approved and accredited Respiratory Care Program with evidence of continued enrollment or newly graduated student awaiting credentials.
  • Must demonstrate accurate and effective communication and documentation both verbally, in writing as well as appropriate technical skills.
  • Current CPR certification required - BLS Healthcare provider Certification (American Heart Association) upon graduating and becoming credentialed PALS and ACLS certifications will be required .

Working Conditions

Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature. Exposure to moderately adverse working conditions in performing certain patient care activities. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
