Job Description Summary

The Nurse Manager has primary responsibility for implementing the mission, vision, policies, goals and objectives of nursing services within their area. As a liaison between nursing and disciplines throughout the SRAlab system of care, the Nurse Manager promotes organizational goals, interdisciplinary and interdepartmental team collaboration. The Nurse Manager has direct accountability and responsibility for their unit while creating a safe and healthy environment.

The Nurse Manager will demonstrate the American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) competencies: The Science (Managing the Business) of nursing leadership, The Art (Leading the People) of nursing leadership and the Creating the Leader Within (the Leader in Yourself).

Job Description

The Nurse Manager:

  • Manages the delivery of nursing care and services within a defined operational nursing unit.
  • Demonstrates the science of nursing leadership by:
  • Participating in the financial management of their unit via development of operating and capital budgets and manages resources.
  • Executing human resource management via managing and monitoring staffing/productivity of assigned staff to ensure execution of goals and projects.
  • Ensuring performance improvement via implementation of quality improvement processes in individual, team and organizational performance to facilitate resolution of identified quality issues.
  • Applying system thinking skills in decision making and understanding of complex adaptive systems.
  • Understanding and incorporating information technology into their practice. Incorporating a strategic management approach.
  • Applying nursing research to clinical practice and participating in nursing research studies.
  • Embracing shared governance.
  • Demonstrates the art of nursing leadership by:
  • Developing and optimizing the performance of team members, resulting in goal attainment, staff motivation and talent retention.
  • Recruiting, training, coaching, and assessing performance of staff. Influencing others and promoting professional development.
  • Communicating with patients, families, and staff to ensure satisfaction and to prevent and resolve conflict.
  • Applying principles of crisis management.
  • Collaboratively partnering with other Nurse Managers and Nurse Leaders across the continuum.
  • Maintaining social justice, cultural and generational competence.
  • Performing all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

Bachelor\'s degree in nursing required. Master\'s degree preferred.

Current Illinois license to practice as a Registered Nurse is required.

Current CPR certification required.

Professional Nursing Certification preferred.

Minimum 5 years of experience in clinical nursing. Experience in rehabilitation preferred.

Demonstrated ability to organize, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Practices in accordance with professional practice standards and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and AONL competencies.

Understanding of the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent, young adult, middle-aged adult and geriatric patients.

Demonstrates the ability to interpret growth and development related information to assure patient needs are met.

Strong analytical skills to assess, plan and implement strategies for successful unit management.
