Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Academic Success and Bar Passage reports to and works in partnership with the Assistant Dean for Academic Success and Bar Passage to advance law school priorities and maximize outcomes. Together both parties will manage the day-to-day operations of Loyola Law’s Academic Success and Bar Passage program. The main goal of the Academic Success Program is to develop and deliver programs to promote the academic success of students from matriculation, throughout law school, and as they prepare to enter the legal profession. This includes programming and support for students during pre-orientation, orientation, the three years of law school, and bar prep.
Primary Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
Academic Success:
Coordinate and collaborate with doctrinal faculty to identify JD students who may be in need of academic support with academic and exam taking skills
Counsel individual students to help them improve their academic and exam-taking skills.
Partner with the Student Services team (FT and Weekend JD) when needed regarding JD students in need of academic support
Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Academic Success & Bar Passage and assist with developing Academic Skills related curriculum and extracurricular workshops.
Lead/teach extracurricular academic skills workshops throughout the academic year.
Research and stay informed of best practices, trends, and pedagogy in academic skills, to include reading comprehension, legal analysis, and issue spotting
Assist with the implementation of the Academic Enhancement Program, to include setting goals and measuring outcomes, developing plans, and engaging students.
Guest lecture in the Academic Enhancement Program’s Advanced Legal Analysis course, a 1L remediation curriculum.
Collaborate with the Asst Dean of Admissions, Asst Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Asst Dean of Academic Success & Bar Passage on the development, implementation, and execution of a Loyola Chicago-specific pre-1L course called “Law School 101”
Co-Chair the Academic Success Committee with the Assistant Dean of Academic Success & Bar Passage
Academic Tutor Program
Manage the First-Year Academic Tutors Program, which includes:
Developing the programming and curriculum to ensure compliance with the American Bar Association ( ABA ) standards and guidelines.
Hire and train the first-year academic tutors for all 1L doctrinal courses.
Supervise the team of Academic Tutors, to include weekly email check-ins and once-per-semester in-person check ins.
Develop and conduct orientation session for Academic Tutors each semester.
Communicate Academic Tutor guidelines to 1L professors and ensure that guidelines are followed for each course/subject.
Create and maintain a feedback loop for students to voice suggestions and/or concerns about the Academic Tutor program or individual tutors.
Provide feedback to individual Academic Tutors as necessary based on both student and professor feedback.
Establish grading guidelines and assign grades to the Academic Tutors at the culmination of each semester
Bar Passage:
Act as one of the points of contact for bar review vendors at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
Ensure that University and Departmental vendor guidelines and regulations are followed by bar review companies
Assist with the implementation of the law school’s partnership agreement with Barbri Bar Review.
Assist with extracurricular bar-related programming and workshops presented by the Department of Academic Success & Bar Passage
Provide bar-related counseling to current JD students and alumni applying to or preparing for the bar exam.
In support of the Assistant Dean and as directed:
establish and maintain relationships with bar examiners in Illinois, and other “high-traffic” jurisdictions.
Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge on the Illinois bar exam and application process, as well as bar preparation programs, techniques, and methods.
Assist with supplemental bar prep programs and bar preparation curriculum
Assist with the collection and organization of data necessary to report on annual bar passage statistics
Assist with tracking graduate’s registration and progress with commercial bar preparation courses.
Serve on the Bar Exam Success Committee
Other:
Continuously improve professional skills and connections, participating in regional and national academic support and bar passage conferences.
Perform other duties in support of the Academic Success and Bar Passage program and the Law School as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA -accredited law school; successful passage of a Bar Exam.
Have been licensed in any state for a minimum of 2-3 years.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Interest in and enthusiasm for helping students build the skills necessary for law school and bar success
Individual must be a self-starter and demonstrate a sound work ethic.
Must be able to function independently with minimal oversight.
Certificates/Credentials/Licenses
Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA -accredited law school; successful passage of a Bar Exam.

Computer Skills
Intermediate level computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
