About the Department

The Section of Genetic Medicine continues to shape the future of personalized medicine with successful research programs focused on the quantitative genetic and genomic science. The Section provides extremely valuable collaborations with investigators in the Department of Medicine who are seeking to develop new and more powerful ways to identify genetic risk factors for common, complex disorders with almost immediate clinical application.

The Section of Genetic Medicine conducts impactful investigations focused on quantitative genetics, systems biology and genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology as well as through extensive collaborations of the faculty throughout the Department of Medicine, Biological Sciences Division and the University of Chicago.

Job Summary

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for lab purchasing, budget keeping, assigning lab responsibilities, breeding and maintaining mouse colonies, supervising all mouse experiments, performing many mouse experiments, and serve as a knowledge/support resource to other lab members and the key to keeping the lab running smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a team of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students to ensure the lab runs smoothly.
  • Purchases all lab supplies, using both UChicago and HHMI purchasing systems.
  • Oversees laboratory budget and advises PI accordingly on personnel hiring and spending.
  • Manages, maintains, and ensures laboratory compliance to the human subjects (IRB), biosafety (IBC), and animal usage (IACUC) protocols.
  • Coordinates with the departmental safety officer to ensure compliance of lab protocols, and assists with the onboarding of new personnel.
  • Manage the laboratory facilities, including the purchase of new equipment and the maintenance and repair of existing laboratory equipment.
  • Provides support for the smooth running of the lab, including personnel management and conflict resolution.
  • Breeds and maintains all mouse colonies that are needed for all research projects in the lab.
  • Supervises and trains new animal lab personnel on various mouse experimental techniques.
  • Performs many mouse experiments, including DSS-induced colitis model, tumor xenograft model, EAE model, bacterial and viral infection model, Lupus model, and MPTP Parkinson\'s disease model.
  • Solves complex problems relating to the animal experiments part of various projects, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making significant contributions to methodology.
  • Guides data collection, evaluation and analysis in mouse experiments.
  • Manages laboratory strains and other collections and databases.
  • Organize weekly laboratory meeting schedule.
  • Guides new lab personnel with on-boarding procedure.
  • Performs check-out procedure for lab personnel exiting the lab.
  • Manages research professionals and support staff involved with planning, monitoring, and compliance aspects of research projects. Advises other researchers on long-range plans for research projects.
  • Manages the laboratory facilities, including the purchase of new equipment and the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
