    Job Description

CARPENTER, Facilities-Repair and Maintenance, to perform carpentry work in all areas of the Institute using a wide range of carpentry tools. Will repair, install, and maintain all types of wood and metal doors, panic hardware, mortise locks, exit devices, and door closures; install VCT floors and other types of flooring; install drop ceilings and other types of ceilings; build walls using drywall and studs; make and install laminate counters, wooden shelves, and cabinets; and use woodworking tools and machinery, e.g., jointer, shaper, mortise and tenon, lathe and thickness planner, table saws, sander machine and general hand tools. May be called in to work to board up broken windows or doors or to assist with other emergency repairs.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: at least seven years’ carpentry experience; high school diploma or its equivalent; ability to work from blueprints, specifications and sketches; thorough working knowledge of the characteristics of various species of wood and other materials and the safe operation of woodworking tools and machinery; experience in all aspects of the finish trade of cabinet making and finish carpentry, including the manufacturing of laminate and wood countertops, shelves, and cabinets and furniture repair; and ability to lift 50 pounds. PREFERRED: vocational training and participation in a carpentry apprenticeship program. Job #23790Working conditions: ascending/descending stairs, traversing the campus, moving about the jobsite and machinery to access equipment, and/or remaining stationary for extended periods; working from ladders, scaffolds, and other above-ground locations such as roofs; wearing personal protective equipment as required by the specific assignment; wearing MIT provided ARC flash rated clothing; working in an environment that contains dust, odors, fumes, high levels of noise, and temperature extremes; performing work near steam and moving machinery and in tight areas and confined spaces such as manholes and crawl spaces; working with and around chemicals and solvents and in research labs and animal facilities; and working outdoors in inclement weatherSchedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.Employees who are assigned to an irregular shift are considered essential personnel in accordance with the MIT Policy on Emergency Closing or Early Release. During emergencies, these employees are excused from their regularly scheduled work only with the specific authorization of their supervisor, regardless of any public announcement that the Institute is closed. Other employees, who work a regular established work schedule, are not considered essential personnel but may be required to work other shifts on an as needed basis.Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check.
