City of Brookhaven Heavy Equipment Operator in Brookhaven, Mississippi

The Heavy Equipment Operator position will operate as a CDL Driver for the City of Brookhaven. *This position has openings in the following departments: *Solid Waste, Water, and Street. 

Summary: This is skilled work in the operation of heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment. 

Essential Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operates a backhoe, digging sewer ditches and holes for sewer repairs or construction.
  • Digs ditches, lay pipe for extension, or taps water mains.
  • Back fills and tamps ditches.
  • Operates a street sweeper, front end loader, and bulldozer as needed
  • Operates a front end loader in loading asphalt, gravel, sand, rock, slag, slurry and similar materials on trucks.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment operated to include higher echelon maintenance on street sweeper, flusher or chipper.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Completion of 10th grade or vocational school AND; 
  • One year experience in the operation of assigned equipment

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • To Drive, you must have and maintain a valid State driver's license and CDL certification (class D, B, or A is acceptable)
  • An operator must have a valid driver's license (Class R)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Must be able to pass a drug/background screen
  • Must have knowledge of operating characteristics of assigned equipment, applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and requlations involved in the operation of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of how utilities are located underground and Mississippi One-Call procedures.
  • Ability to complete necessary maintenance records on equipment operated, to make minor operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment, to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments, and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability and strength to perform the work of this class under adverse conditions, to meet such medical and physical standards as may be prescribed and skill in the operation of assigned equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 100lbs, operate vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
