Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY:

The Med Surgical post op unit is located on the eighth floor of St. Michael Medical Center. This unit has 32 private rooms and is a telemetry capable surgical unit. The nurses on the floor are experts in post-surgical care and work closely with other care givers who assist in the recovery process. Our unit consists of general surgical and overflow medical with multi-system involvement and patients requiring “non-acute” cardiac telemetry monitoring. We serve Adolescents (16+ years old), adults, and geriatric patients. The patient to nurse ratio is set to match staff requirement to meet the care needs of patients. The Charge RN makes shift by shift assignments based on patient census, patient complexity, nurse experience level, and staff skill mix. All nurses are licensed in the State of Washington and some are certified in their area of practice. All nursing staff maintain competency through continuing education, department in-services, and annual updates of unit specific competencies.

The most common surgical patients are joint replacements, general surgery, gynecological procedures and urology. Surgical volumes drive our unit census. We work in close collaboration with our Peri-Op team for patient placement and bed planning. General medical patients round out our unit census as overflow from other hospital units.
