Wellington Sector Lead, Biotech Private Investments in Boston, Massachusetts

About the Role

As part of the continued expansion of our alternative capabilities, we seek to recruit a biotech investor to join our Biomedical Innovation Fund focused on investing in private biotechnology companies. Wellington has managed dedicated public-equity healthcare portfolios since 1984 and is the largest manager of such assets worldwide. In addition, the firm has been investing in private markets since 2003 (in private biotech companies since 2011), and the Firm launched its first dedicated private capital fund in 2014. Today, the privates team currently manages approximately $5 billion in assets across six growth equity and venture funds and is the fastest growing investment group within Wellington.

The Sector Lead will be responsible for building our investment pipeline, generating deal flow, conducting in depth due diligence, develop investment recommendation and manage portfolio companies. In addition, develop thematic research based ideas to generate potential investment recommendations as well has develop network by building relationships directly with venture investors, private companies within biomedical venture capital and crossover investment ecosystem. We expect this individual to leverage his or her insight and experience during the investment process, while working closely with others across our investment platform, including our Industry Research team. Candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to work in a highly collaborative environment and contribute to the overall team culture and process.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

The following essential skills are required for the role:

• Investment acumen and passion – The Sector Lead will have a successful track record of leading investments in late-stage venture and/or growth stage companies, along with a deep understanding of the innovation occurring within the biomedical industry. The ideal candidate will be passionate for science, drug development, and deep experience with the biomedical market. The Sector Lead will employ a fundamental, research oriented, bottom-up approach to investing in private companies and the ability to implement those ideas through a highly analytical and detailed approach.

• Scientific and clinical data acumen–The ideal candidate will have superior analytical capabilities for scientific and clinical data and an eagerness to apply their expertise in support of the biomed team. The ability to synthesize disparate information, identify the most important elements, and arrive at a conclusion is required. The Sector Lead will be curious about private investing and science and demonstrate a strong desire to identify differentiated investment opportunities through a thorough diligence process.

• Superior collaboration and influencing skills – The successful candidate will enjoy being an individual contributor within a highly collaborative team and embrace the benefits of overlapping lines of idea generation. The Sector Lead will build strong trusting relationships externally with company management teams, industry contacts, clients, and prospects as well as internally with Investment Research colleagues. The ability to take risk and challenge investment views is critical, as is the humility to admit mistakes and a desire to learn from others; the Sector Lead must recognize the benefits of diverse perspectives. The ability to communicate (both verbally and in writing) action-oriented opinions clearly and with conviction and contribute to an open investment dialogue is important.

• Growth mindset and Emotional Intelligence – The flexibility and openness to continue learning, evolving and growing as an investor is required. The successful candidate will have a global perspective and creative approach for thinking about innovation and the evolution of the emerging technologies in the biomedical landscape.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

• A minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience in a private markets’ investment role, including specific experience in venture capital / growth investing, clinical medicine, biomedical research, biotech and drug development experience

• Established industry relationships and network to source deal flow in relevant companies including entrepreneurs, adjacent funds, accelerators, academic labs/founders, and cutting-edge science & technology development;

• Ability and track record of generating strong investment returns;

• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and to collaborate with experienced, cross-functional deal teams;

• Strong bottom-up fundamental approach to research;

• Strong work ethic and attention to detail;

• Strong interpersonal skills and experience in a collaborative, team-based, results-oriented environment;

• Independence of thought, high degree of intellectual curiosity, and an entrepreneurial nature; and

• Superior academic credentials: an MD or PhD in a biomedical discipline is strongly preferred,

Our approach to compensation considers all aspects of total compensation; all employees are eligible to receive salary, variable compensation, and benefits. The base salary range for this position is:

USD 100,000 - 225,000

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered when making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets; role; skills and experience; certifications; and education. This range is an estimate, and further details on salary and total compensation aspects will be shared with candidates during the recruitment process.

Base salary is only one component of Wellington’s total compensation approach. Other rewards may include a discretionary Corporate Bonus and/ or Incentives, if eligible.
