JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Manager – HSM provides on-site leadership and administrative representation during off-shifts. Serves as an organizational resource/facilitator and/or makes decisions which support the MMC-BD mission. Duties also include the overall development, education, and monitoring of the infection control program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Acts as an organizational resource to provide information and interpret policy/procedures and standards of care to facilitate positive resident outcomes.

  2. Provides a leadership presence and accountability to our internal and external customers as Senior Services on-site representative during off-shifts. Promotes the culture of customer service.

  3. Keeps Director of Nursing and Administrator informed of issues/resolutions as appropriate.

  4. Maintains an effective presence throughout Senior Services in order to assure organizational resources and resident needs are balanced on a consistent basis.

  5. Ensures physicians and staff have the adequate resources to function within their assigned role to meet resident care needs.

  6. Participates in the peer interviewing process.

  7. Mentors staff in learning new roles.

  8. Coaches and develops licensed and non-licensed nursing staff.

  9. Coaches staff on performance timely and reports to Director of Nursing concerns about low performance or unsafe practices.

  10. Provides leadership to prevent, minimize and resolution of immediate risk and safety issues. Communicates concerns to appropriate Senior Services leadership in a timely manner and participates in the resolution through quality improvement or other mechanisms as appropriate.

  11. Provides real time operational leadership to staff including feedback about performance during off hours, and delivers this to line management staff on a timely basis.

  12. Provides input to the annual budgeting process for Hillside Manor.

  13. Takes an active role in the Quality Assurance Program.

  14. Conduct building wide surveillance based on IC plans and risk assessments.

  15. Familiar with Casper report and monthly/quarterly/yearly HSM numbers.

  16. Uses decision making skills to ensure fiscally responsible use of resources, which includes staffing appropriately.

  17. Demonstrates a working knowledge of health care finances as it relates to resident care.

  18. Communicates effectively with staff regarding PPD staffing. Consistently role models the decisions made to staff on rationale for decisions.

  19. Serves as resource to staff for resident care issues. Provides leadership decision making to staff in the absences of administrative or management staff.

  20. Facilitates critical thinking among clinical staff in order to problem solve clinical situations for the best possible outcome.

  21. Work closely with the Medical Director and local/state health departments when there is a suspected or confirmed outbreak of any communicable disease.

  22. Maintains a working knowledge of and role models compliance with State of Wisconsin and Federal regulatory standards, policies and procedures.

  23. Demonstrates a working knowledge of State Regulations and Federal codes and explains the “why” behind expectations.

  24. Monitors staff competencies related to the infection control practices.

  25. Advances own professional growth, i.e. formal and continuing education, networking and professional organization involvement.

  26. Participates on committees and in planning/implementing quality initiatives.

  27. Participate in providing and planning Senior Services educational programs.

  28. Remains current in knowledge of healthcare issues, nationally and locally.

  29. Attends seminars, workshops, classes, and on-line training as needed to keep current on infection control. This would include the NHSN.

  30. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.

  31. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.

  1. Performs employee evaluations.

  2. Other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Preferred/Optional: Bachelor degree in nursing.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum Required: Three or more years’ clinical experience.

Preferred/Optional: At least one year demonstrated leadership experience.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required: Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire. Wisconsin driver’s license with acceptable record.

Preferred/Optional: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.
