Gas Service Laborer

As a Gas Service Laborer, you will perform gas service upgrades and installations from the gas main to the service valve.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates safe, high-quality work practices in a team atmosphere

  • Performs up to standards within time frames outlined by Supervisor and Project Manager.

  • Commitment to customer service - responding to the needs of internal and external customers.

  • Completes all work in an organized, timely manner, within the instructed standard procedure.

  • Identifies and reports all hazardous working conditions and specifically those hazardous conditions that prohibit the safe completion of work to management.

  • Sets appropriate priorities and works in accordance with legal hours worked policy and all safety requirements as outlined within Corporate Policy and Procedures.

  • Day, Evening, and Weekend Shifts are required. Some overtime and weekend hours may at times be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Knowledge of the operation of the tools and equipment needed to perform gas service upgrades, including but not limited to, excavators, dump trucks, loaders, etc.

  • Ability to comprehend hand-held technology; i.e., Cell Phones, GPS, PDAs, and Digital Cameras.

  • Strong interest in the construction process; preference toward underground utilities, Gas Lines, Mechanical Trades, and Skilled Laborer Trades.

  • Physical Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., and to comfortably walk at a steady pace throughout the work day.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with little supervision.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.

  • Must be willing to work in a multicultural environment.

  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions applicable.

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • 1 year of experience working in the gas construction field.

  • Knowledge of BGE policies and practices as they relate to Gas Construction Standards.

  • Current BGE OQ qualifications are a plus.

Pre-Screen:

  • Upon offer, employees may be required to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, background, and/or MVR check.

License & Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License: Must have a clean Driving Record, free of any moving violations within the last five years and without any suspensions (for any reason); minimal non-moving violations (less than three within the last five years).

  • DOT Medical Card and CDL license are a plus.

Travel Requirements:

  • Must be willing to travel or relocate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Rare : (less than 10%): crawling, climbing ladders, sitting, climbing

  • Occasional : (up to 33%): kneeling, climbing on/off a truck, lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Frequent : (up to 66%): standing, walking, stooping, squatting, manual dexterity, seeing distant, reaching, hearing-speech range, depth perception, body-twisting, lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs, reading, color vision, lifting, balancing, lifting up to 10 lbs

  • Continuous : (up to 100%): a sense of touch, seeing, speaking clearly, gripping, range of motion, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs

Safety:

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.
