Johns Hopkins University Campus Police Sergeant - Administrative in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Campus Police Sergeant - Administrative functions in concert with the University's various other service-oriented personnel in providing for a safe and secure environment and orchestrates and oversees police functions during shift.

*This position is day shift: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise a squad of campus security officers during the course of their shift.

  • Respond to emergency situations, crime events, or to any other circumstance where the presence of a supervisor is required by the Campus Security Department’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) or where the presence of a supervisor would be in the best interest of the operation of the Campus Security Department.

  • Account for attendance of personnel assigned to the Sergeant’s squad, including maintaining payroll and scheduling leave.

  • Schedule personnel for training and ensure that all personnel under said sergeant’s supervision are apprised of the most up-to-date training and information necessary for the performance of their duties.

  • Ensure that all personnel assigned to the Campus Security Department are properly performing their duties.

  • Supervise any Baltimore Police Department officers working during the Sergeant’s shift.

  • Notify the Director of Campus Security of any incidents which require notification according to the SOP.

  • Notify other Peabody Institute departments as required by the SOP.

  • Investigate any complaints against Campus Security officers under the Sergeant’s supervision.

  • Administer the CCTV and access control systems, to include dealing with contractors who install or service said systems.

  • Order supplies as needed, including office supplies, uniforms, and radios.

  • Perform administrative functions related to the generation and accounting of purchase orders and P-card purchases.

  • Perform any other functions consistent with the Sergeant’s position, as directed by the Director of Campus Security.

Special Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR.

  • Must be able to professionally react to situations, make accurate observations and to write clear and accurate reports about these observations.

  • Must possess sound verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively and professionally.

  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.

  • Sergeants must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, walk, and run moderate distances. Must be able to go up/down flights of steps

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment include automobiles, vans, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc.

  • Must be able to read, interpret, and understand University policies and procedures

  • Must be able to withstand exposure to inclement weather

  • Must meet Maryland State Police requirements and investigation for a Special Police Commission and have exemplary background and integrity; denial of special commission may be grounds for dismissal.

Additional information

  • Must be able to successfully complete a health screening from the Office of Health, Safety and Environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.

  • Minimum of three years of law enforcement or related experience.

  • Must be in possession of a valid U.S. motor vehicle driver's license, have and maintain a clean motor vehicle driving record (no more than two current points).
