Johns Hopkins University Assistant Director Second Year Experience in Baltimore, Maryland

The Student Transitions and Family Engagement (ST+FE) portfolio seeks a creative, energetic, and entrepreneurial Assistant Director Second Year Experience to join the portfolio. The ST+FE portfolio is responsible for the first-year experience, second-year experience, family engagement, and New Student Orientation. This position works across all campus partners to develop a holistic, comprehensive and co-curricular second-year experience for all undergraduate students at the Homewood campus. This role also tracks, monitors, and intervenes with students who are thinking of leaving the university and seeks to understand their experiences and how to enhance and further engage them in the university community. This position reports to the Executive Director of Student Transitions and Family Engagement.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Second Year Experience (75%)

  • Develop and oversee a strategic, comprehensive, and engaging year-long second-year experience for new students, including but not limited to the SYE Conference, a Re-Orientation programming, Transfer Student Orientation, that aligns with the unique needs of Hopkins students as well as national trends in transition, affinity building, and retention.

  • Convene a Second-Year Experience Committee in partnership with On-Campus Living, comprised of faculty, staff, and students, who work as an advisory committee for Second-Year Experience, working across divisions, campuses, and experiences.

  • Collaborates with staff from the Life Design Lab, Alumni Relations, Global Education, LEED, On-Campus Living, Center for Student Success, Peabody Conservatory, and Center for Social Concern to support existing or develop new experiential learning and professional development opportunities for sophomores.

  • Catalogue, assess, develop, and implement, and measure learning outcomes for SYE-led programming and resources for second-year students.

  • Working closely with On-Campus Living, to develop a comprehensive residential curriculum for second-year students focused on learning and development.

  • Create and maintain the SYE website as an engaging information hub for all second-year students, updating content and links regularly.

  • Contributes to the Family Engagement newsletters, family portal, and other university channels to help inform and educate second-year families.

  • Develop a robust social media campaign for second year and transfers students.

  • Serve as an active member of the Welcome Weeks planning group, in partnership with Leadership, Engagement, and Experiential Development (LEED).

  • Develop and conduct comprehensive assessments of SYE interventions, sharing recommendations and insight with the SYE Committee and leadership.

  • Establishes strong partnerships with and engages student leaders (e.g., RAs, sophomore class officers, SGA, multicultural student organizations, etc.) in order to understand the lived student experience and in planning collaborative SYE programs and events.

  • Works closely with On-Campus Living staff to plan, implement, and evaluate initiatives to enhance community and learning among sophomore residents.

  • Collaborate with Admissions to create a seamless transition from admitted transfer student status to a fully recognized Johns Hopkins University student.

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Directors for FYE, both in ST+FE and On-Campus Living, ensures a coordinated transition from the first-year to second-year, including communication, resource development, and collaborative programming.

  • Ensure consistency of messaging, branding, strategic sequencing, and operational excellence as part of SYE.

Attrition, Retention, & Success (25%)

  • Analyze and assess current data on attrition and retention for second-year students.

  • Identify gaps in opportunities for students who are high achieving yet possess low institutional affinity.

  • Serve on Hopkins 360 (the retention and affinity building working group) to ensure the success and support of second-year students, including using the early alert system to manage interventions.

  • Formulate and implement a sustainable yearly strategic plan that addresses attrition gaps.

  • Manage student raised tracking items in the early alert system, including extensive notes and regular outreach.

  • Develop and execute interventions for students who might consider transferring.

  • Collaborates with academic advisors and staff from the Life Design Lab, Alumni Relations, Global Education, Center for Student Success, and Center for Social Concern to support existing or develop new experiential learning and professional development opportunities for students who are struggling with their affinity.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In addition to being student centered and possessing knowledge of college student developmental stages/needs, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of the mission of a complex, decentralized research university; excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to successfully manage multiple priorities; and strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with students, faculty, parents, and public is mandatory.

  • Position involves strong collaborative and problem-solving abilities.

  • Qualified applicants must also have demonstrated ability to relate well to a diverse campus.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, social media, website management, and other relevant technology.

  • This position is part of a larger group who oversee the First Year, Second Year and Family Programming initiatives. Assistance during busy seasons for all of these programs, regardless of direct management, is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or related area required.

  • Three years of experience in planning and/or coordinating events, establishing/maintaining collaborative working relationships with faculty, professionals, and students in a college campus environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply student development theory including and understanding of the developmental issues of college sophomores.

Starting Salary Range: $55,200 - $96,600 Annually ($68,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
