Arapahoe County Government HVAC-R Technician in Aurora, Colorado

NOTE: While we are only hiring for two Furnace Technician's, this position is eligible for potential career progression as outlined below. The anticipated starting pay rate for the Furnace Technician, depending on experience is $28.22 per hour. The full hiring range for the Furnace Technician is $28.22 to $42.33 per hour. The full hiring range for the Lead Furnace Technician is $31.62 to $47.41 per hour. Furnace Technician Performs skilled duties related to the repair, installation, replacement and modification of gas-fired combustion appliances and space heating systems to improve homes that have been determined eligible for home energy assistance. Assists other division employees with operational duties associated with energy conservation upgrades and health and safety improvements of eligible homes in Arapahoe and Adams Counties.

Furnace Technician Lead - (Career Progression) Performs skilled duties related to the repair, installation, replacement and modification of gas-fired combustion appliances and space heating systems to improve homes that have been determined eligible for home energy assistance. Assists other division employees with operational duties associated with energy conservation upgrades and health and safety improvements of eligible homes in Arapahoe and Adams Counties. Supervises field crews and assumes lead responsibility at jobsites for workflow, productivity, completion of work, and completion of all required documentation. Verifies that all work completed at each home meets or exceeds current Standard Work Specifications and all state and federal program guidelines, and accurately accounts for all materials used. Ensures that projects are completed in a safe, efficient and effective manner, and is responsible for the timely completion of all projects.

Duties Furnace Technician

Receives work orders / assignments from direct supervisor, Audit-inspector team, Operations Supervisor or Division Manager for inspection and or repair work on space heating and water heating systems. Performs comprehensive safety tests and checks on combustion appliances including gas flex connections, gas leaks, carbon monoxide, draft and spillage, and room pressure imbalances. Properly checks, identifies, addresses, and resolves all potential health and safety issues on all combustion appliances in each home including furnaces, Water heaters, boilers, gas ranges, gas dryers, wall units and free-standing heaters. Makes necessary adjustments to improve heating system efficiency. Repairs, replaces, and properly seals ductwork as needed. Effectively resolves residential no-heat situations. Properly trouble-shoots and identifies faulty heating system components and successfully repairs systems as needed. Replaces space heating system and performs all needed adjustments to ductwork, venting, combustion air, electrical and gas lines. Installs high efficiency condensing furnaces to meet local codes. Performs sheet metal work related to repair and installation of heating systems, including fabricating, replacing, and adapting as needed. Educates clients on what services are needed and why. Also teaches clients how to use their current equipment or newly installed equipment. Initiates purchase requests for parts and materials needed for appliance replacements and repairs. Ensures that all materials and parts used on each project are accurately accounted for and property documented on required paperwork. Provides complete documentation on required forms for all pre and post safety and efficiency test results, the original condition of appliances, all work performed, and issues resolved, and all follow up. Maintaining a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Properly uses and maintains assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles. Responds to emergency situations to resolve h ating/cooling and plumbing issues. Contributes to a team under general supervision of an experienced professional or manager. Skilled specialist that demonstrates reliable judgment in resolving issues and making recommendations. Promote a positive learning environment in mentoring and directing of apprentices. Performs comprehensive heating system and combustion appliance safety inspections in accordance with program guidelines. Thoroughly documents results of initial inspections and initiates timely and appropriate follow-up on all health and safety and/or efficiency issues. Interacts with Operations Supervisors to address appliance replacement issues and combustion appliance repairs. Assists crews in the performance of weatherization improvements as needed. Provides written and oral reports to supervision and management as needed. Assists the Inventory Clerk with material inventory control. Helps monitor warehouse activity and checks out materials, equipment and supplies to crews as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations, standards and codes affecting the Weatherization Program. Knowledge of energy conservation techniques, theory and application, to include knowledge of the following: thermal boundaries; physics of the transfer of energy (heat loss); R-values; blower door testing; insulation practices; door, window, and glass replacement; HVAC systems; combustion appliance safety; ventilation practices; air infiltration a Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
