Newell Brands Sr. Product Engineer in Atlanta, Georgia

This position will work on new product development (NPD) projects for both new and existing products. The role of a Senior Product Development Engineer will help drive all aspects of the development process – conception, ideation, design, detailed engineering, tooling, product validation, supplier manufacturing, and productions start. This position will require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Softgoods, Project Management, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain. Some domestic and international travel may be required.

General Responsibilities

Product Engineering – 40%

• Collaborates with peers in product brand management, design, usability, quality, and manufacturing to ensure the product meets cost targets, timing, and specification requirements.

• Supports costing and capital expenditure analysis activities by creating product/part cost estimates and performing failure mode analysis to mitigate risk.

• Understands and applies federal, industry and internal standards and ensures products meet safety, compliance, and performance requirements.

• Supports tooling development , engineering pilots, and supplier manufacturing.

• Participates in internal forums to encourage innovation and technical sharing for continuous learning and mentoring with more junior engineers.

• Drives R&D product development using engineering project management methods (task decomposition, root cause analysis, executive summaries) while collaborating with schedule-driven Project Management team.

• Informs and directs other non-Product Engineering R&D roles tasks to ensure the product is fully functionable and manufacturable within set project targets.

Design Engineering – 30%

• Partners with industrial designers to ensure safety, product performance, and manufacturing needs are met.

• Develops product architecture using top-down design methodologies that lead to robust product designs and flexible 3D drawings adaptive to change and iteration.

• Generates Computer Aided Design (CAD) models of parts and assemblies and FEA and other simulation tools to optimize designs for cost, function, and manufacturing.

• Builds prototypes with using state-of-the-art rapid prototyping capabilities with 3D printing (FFF, SLS, SLA, and others), tube bending, urethane casting, sewing, and more.

• Collaborates with Design Engineers on 3D data development.

Product Validation – 30%

• Responsible for ensuring product meets all required standards and requirements using empirical test methods.

• Creates test plan for product validation refencing federal safety regulations, industry regulations, and internal requirements.

• Validates prototypes in conjunction with Test Engineers and Technicians.

• Analyzes test results with engineering fundamentals to understand product performance and implements enhancements.

• Fabricates prototype samples for testing using basic hand, power, bench tools, and rapid prototyping machines, etc.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering, or similar disciplines.

· 5-8 years of product development or product design engineering experience.

· Extensive experience with 3D CAD modeling (Creo Preferred) and analysis in developing and iterating assemblies of components.

· Extensive experience with plastic injection molding, metal forming and tubing.

· Strong working knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals: static analysis, dynamic analysis, deformable bodies, mechanism design, and manufacturing.

· Strong skills related to root cause analysis and failure mode analysis.

· Experience using basic hand, power and bench tools to fabricate prototypes and/or modify test samples.

· Strong communication, interpersonal, writing, planning, and presentation skills.

· Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel).

Additional Qualifications

· Knowledge of softgoods assembly to hardgoods and softgoods manufacturing processes is a plus.

· Knowledge of electronics development and integration into hardgoods is a plus.

· Knowledge of programming (firmware, software, AI) is a plus.

· Experience with patent claims is a plus.

· Experience working with non-US manufacturers and other vendors is a plus.

· Experience creating and maintaining SOPs and other processes increase R&D operational efficiency is a plus.

Additional Requirements

· A short portfolio of previous projects is strongly encouraged to be submitted with the application. Emphasis on projects where you played a large role in the engineering design of physical projects.
