Description:

The Safety Specialist, as a member of the Employee Health Department, facilitates implementation of the comprehensive Trinity Health TogetherSafe program as well as regional strategies to achieve optimal patient and colleague safety outcomes. This individual partners with ministry leaders, colleagues and medical staff to implement and sustain safety and reliability structures, processes and behaviors. This role will use data systems in place such as THEIR (Trinity Health Employee Incident Report, VOICE), safety science, change methodology, improvement principles and creative educational approaches to achieve sustainable high reliability practices and outcomes in both patient and colleague safety domains. ​

Full-time benefited position scheduled 32 hours per week.

Qualifications

Education

Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, nursing, engineering or related field.

Preferred: Master’s degree in healthcare, nursing, engineering or related field, plus additional certification as Patient Safety Professional, Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality or other related certification.

Related Experience

Minimum: 2 years’ experience in high reliability, organizational improvement, quality, employee health, risk management or patient and colleague safety leadership.

Preferred: 3-5 years’ experience in high reliability, organizational improvement, quality, employee health, risk management or patient and colleague safety leadership.

Essential Functions

  • Mission, Values & Vision: Knows, understands, incorporates & demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Values & Vision in behaviors, practices & decisions.

  • Develops and implements safety program elements and processes using safety frameworks and reliability science.

  • Leader on system wide initiatives to support deployment, measurement, continuous improvement and sustainment of high reliability strategy.

  • Monitors and analyzes safety data and applies data insights to local strategy and improvement efforts.

  • Facilitates and collaborates with leaders and team members to help drive safety behaviors, accountability and outcomes.

  • Coaches, mentors and rounds with leaders to develop reliability awareness to strengthen organizational knowledge.

  • Provides consultation on safety and reliability concepts to support improvement and change management activities.

  • Partners with Risk Managers and Colleague Health and Wellness to achieve consistent and mature safety systems (e.g. debriefing, cause analysis, event classification, disclosure, safety alerts, learning and improvement).

  • Leads reliability education, behavior training and reinforcement efforts with colleagues.

  • Partners with Organizational Effectiveness, Performance Excellence, MarComm and Experience of Care to ensure safety is fully integrated into organizational systems, tools and practices (e.g. THLS, Communication, Education, Onboarding.)

  • Provides project facilitation to reduce preventable harm and increase colleague safety.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, state & local laws/regulations and OSHA regulations, Trinity Health Integrity & Compliance Program & Code of Conduct, as well as other policies, procedures & guidelines in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects safe, honest, ethical & professional behavior & safe work practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum:

  • Strong knowledge of high reliability frameworks and systems.

  • Root cause analysis knowledge and experience.

  • Strong presentation skills.

  • Ability to analyze data to tell the story.

  • Coaching experience.

  • Ability to build relationships and trust with teams. Ability to plan, organize and execute assigned duties with minimal supervision.

Preferred:

  • Strong background in improving systems and structures through the HRO lens, leading teams and people in a large organization.

  • Ability to analyze data from different sources.

  • Ability to solve complex problems and develop approaches to support change and improvement.

  • Project management skills or experience.
