Scope of Role

Performs responsible advanced level skilled mechanical work on a variety of heavy trucks with a focus on solid waste collection trucks including boom grapple trucks and leaf collection trucks. Will also perform work on other City vehicles and equipment as needed.

Qualifications

Required: Graduation from high school supplemented by community college coursework in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills, and continuing education in the maintenance and repairs of vehicles and heavy equipment and experience in repairing automotive and power-driven equipment or equivalent experience in the field. Minimum of five years of responsible heavy truck and diesel equipment experience is preferred.

Special Requirement: Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License. Possession of appropriate certification for air conditioning coolant recycling. Possession of North Carolina safety inspections certification. Possession of an ASE Mechanical Certification in gas and/or diesel engines.

Specific License or Certification

• Must possess a minimum of a CDL permit, with the ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL)within 90 days of hire.
• Ability to learn routes and navigate in the City of Albemarle.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical non repetitive work, distinguish the work performed at an arm's reach, and read diagrams and repair manuals
