Cytotechnologist - Pathology - Albany, NY - Part Time Days

Position Summary:

To apply and contribute to the St. Peter’s Health Partners mission and values in performing a variety of cytologic testing and related duties following established procedures and protocols.

Responsibilities:

  1. Exhibits competency in all procedures performed.

Performs duties independent of direct supervision.

Develops a complete understanding of the basic operation of all instrumentation/equipment used according to SOP, department policies and procedures.

Keeps up to date on policies, procedures, skills, documentation requirements for continuing education, checklists and successful completion of competency surveys in a timely manner.

Maintains correct patient ID throughout testing.

Able to troubleshoot and solve problems in a timely manner.

Able to access, understand and adhere to procedure and policy manuals within department.

Follows SOP for specimen collection/processing/storage/handling/reference lab testing.

Acceptable CAP proficiency testing results (every year).

Maintains and utilizes cross training skills.

Precisely and accurately enters patient/QC results.

Labels correctly (acceptable threshold is 1 exception).

  1. Participates in the quality management of the laboratory.

Makes suggestions and provides feedback in a timely manner for issues and/or problems.

Maintains strict confidentiality and security of information.

Recognizes, appropriately resolves and documents in a timely fashion QA issues.

Understands lab specific monitors and Q.A. program and participates in the evaluation of specialized reports for QC, QA.

  1. Accepts accountability for one’s actions and work.

Communicates and documents necessary information to appropriate HCP/staff/supervisors to assure quality health care.

Orders supplies or informs appropriate staff when stock is low.

Maintains a neat organized and stocked work area.

Completes required CE.

Utilizes the system to retrieve patient/test information.

Achieves the goals set in previous year’s performance appraisal.

Adheres to department policy regarding attendance/work hours/break time.

Exhibits flexibility in scheduling.

Follows safety rules and organizational policies in the work place (ie. Internet, gloves, electronic devices).

Attendance/Punctuality in accordance with hospital policy.

  1. Productivity and Initiative: The degree to which an employee can be relied upon to complete the existing work as well as searches out new tasks.

Able to complete work assignment in a timely manner.

Searches out new tasks or completes an additional task not in their “scheduled” duties.

Willingly assists in the training of personnel or students.

Demonstrates the ability to perform multiple tasks effectively.

Assists in revising procedures or assists in evaluation of new procedures.

Cross-trains into other sections and maintains competency in other sections for successful cross training.

TAT meets threshold.

  1. Contributes to teamwork by demonstrating attitudes which enhance productivity and a positive work atmosphere.

Clearly communicates concerns and issues with those directly involved without triangulating.

Maintains non-defensive and non-judgmental communications with coworkers and guests.

Exhibits positive attitude and adaptability to change.

Recognizes role of laboratory and how it relates to overall function of the corporation.

Demonstrates initiative to use cross training skills to help other departments.

Assists coworkers as needed.

Possess the necessary people skills to interact effectively with all customers and make customer service a priority.

Recognizes developing issues (staff/procedural) and addresses them before escalating to a crisis.

Education Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency, (i.e. American Society of Clinical Pathologists or International Academy of Cytology eligibility).

  2. Five years of experience in cytotechnology.

  3. Current New York State Department of Health registration and successful completion of CMS Proficiency testing requirements.

  4. Current license from New York State Department of Education.

Pay Range:$31.50 - $43.06

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
