What you will do:

As an essential member of a fully integrated and interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Chaplain is knowledgeable and skilled in shared responsibility with colleagues in the holistic care of those entrusted to the healthcare team. All SPHP's Chaplains must be disposed, freely, and willingly to use the Core Values of this organization as handy guiding tools for compliance with the overarching mission and ministry of SPHP.

Responsibilities:

  • Possess an emotional balance that ensures an atmosphere conducive of a professional working relationship in collaboration with spiritual care colleagues, other SPHP colleagues, and volunteers.

  • Have own means of transportation, with willingness and flexibility that allows for driving between hospitals, in-patient or out-patient continuum of care health facilities within SPHP, as may be assigned and, or required.

  • Demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of the MISSION and CORE VALUES of SPHP.

  • Have good understanding of, and commitment to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.

  • Possess ability to work collaboratively with members of the interdisciplinary care team, develop integrated care plan, and maintain excellent quality of patient’s care-related communication.

  • Possess the capacity to read, form, comprehend, and communicate ideas meaningfully and appropriately in written and oral English.

  • Possess skills or willingness to learn required skills to perform patient’s spiritual and emotional needs assessment, plan of care, and document the same electronically in a patient’s health care/medical record.

  • skills that dispose a patient to be open to spiritual/emotional conversation, counseling, rituals, prayer, or other spiritually healing practices that may be meaningful to a patient during a spiritual care visit.

  • Have communication skill for active participation in multidisciplinary patient care conferences, patients’ care development program meetings, Grand rounds, escalation Huddles, and others.

  • Have capacity and willingness to respond to emergency and crisis intervention requests for spiritual and emotional support, and other spiritual care-related requests/referrals by patients’ families/loved ones, and other health care colleagues/physicians and other clinicians.

  • Be flexible and willing to share shift rotation for on-site supportive spiritual and emotional care presence to patients, patient’s families/loved ones, and colleagues, 24 hours, 7 days a week.

  • Maintain a monthly statistical record for measuring and accounting for Spiritual Care Services ministries as may be expected by appropriate leadership.

  • Be willing to participate in, or lead deceased patients’ memorial serves for bereaved families.

  • Be willing to initiate and maintain communication with area faith communities of clergies by consultation and notification of admission and discharge, as requested by patient or his/her family/loved ones.

  • Be able and willing to integrate spiritual care into every facet of SPHP ministry where assigned.

  • Have the ability and willingness to freely participate actively in the active initiative, planning, developing, and implementing, through measured outcomes of Spiritual Care Department programs or projects; provide enhanced holistic healing ministry, measured by the extent of spiritual services provided, or made available to all the facets of SPHP’s healing ministry locations.

  • Have the capacity and willingness to freely initiate, develop, plan, implement, and measure own annual work performance goals, as well as personal and professional development goals that align with Spiritual Care Department’s Annual Strategic Initiatives and Plans, to meet SPHP’s system-wide Strategic Plan/s and goals.

  • Have the capacity for an intentionally mindful, constructive, and unitive spiritual solution to matters of conflict or division, which may have the potential to hamper the care or well-being of patients, patients’ families/loved ones, physicians or other clinicians and colleagues in any of SPHP’s Faith-based or non-Faith-based healthcare environment.

  • Be willing and able to mentor Spiritual Care Volunteers/students.

  • Be willing and ready to accept and perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

  • Be active and in good standing with one’s own faith tradition affiliation, with demonstrable proof, if requested by SPHP’s HR or hiring Spiritual Care Department leadership.

What you will need:

  • Master’s degree in theology, philosophy, counseling, psychology, pastoral care, spirituality, or their equivalencies from an accredited academic institution is required.

  • All chaplains must meet or be willing to meet within two years of hire, the following threshold educational and certification requirements:

  • Sixteen hundred (1600) hours, or one year residency in clinical pastoral education (CPE), or the equivalence in clinical counseling or psychology is a requirement. CPE certification is preferred.

  • A minimum of three (3) years pastoral experience required after beginning Clinical Pastoral Education.

  • Required to maintain behavior in the community consistent with high moral character.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills showing a high degree of confidentiality, sensitivity, and discretion.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team relationship with other members of the department and health care personnel to assure quality communication is required.

Pay Range: $22.25 - $30.24

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
