A Direct Support Professional (DSP) works with individuals who have intellectual or developmental disabilities, assisting them with various daily tasks to help them lead more independent and fulfilling lives.

 

Job Title: Direct Support Professional

Job Summary: The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides compassionate care and support to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Working in a community-based setting, the DSP assists clients in achieving their personal goals, promoting independence, and enhancing their quality of life.

Responsibilities:

  1. Personal Care: Assist clients with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, grooming, and dressing.
  2. Medication Management: Administer medication according to prescribed schedules and document accurately.
  3. Meal Preparation: Plan and prepare nutritious meals based on dietary restrictions and preferences.
  4. Household Tasks: Perform light housekeeping duties such as laundry, cleaning, and tidying living spaces.
  5. Transportation: Safely transport clients to appointments, recreational activities, and community outings.
  6. Supportive Services: Provide emotional support, companionship, and encouragement to clients in achieving their goals.
  7. Documentation: Maintain thorough and accurate records of client progress, activities, and any incidents or concerns.
  8. Communication: Collaborate with team members, families, and healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care and support for clients.
  9. Crisis Intervention: Respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations, following established protocols and procedures.
  10. Advocacy: Advocate for the rights and preferences of clients, empowering them to make informed choices and participate in decision-making processes.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (some positions may require additional education or certification).
  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in challenging situations.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record (if required for transportation duties).
  • Ability to pass background checks and drug screening.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and transfer clients as needed (with proper training and assistance).
  • Stamina to perform tasks requiring prolonged standing, bending, and physical exertion.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
