Job Description

General Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, assists in managing the daily operations and activities of professional nursing and nursing support staff on the Maternity Unit. Supports unit level performance improvement initiatives, coaches clinical staff in the delivery of care, identifies and corrects Joint Commission regulations. Provides direct individualized patient care at an experienced clinical nurse level as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1 Partners with the Nurse Manager to ensure that the unit’s strategic plan, vision and goals are aligned with the Division and System’s Nursing strategic plan.

2 Ensures adequate staffing levels and skill mix are maintained based on census and acuity.

3 Demonstrates advanced knowledge and critical thinking in the delivery of patient care in Maternity including the newborn infants, postpartum women, antepartum women, and general surgical patients.

4 Partners with Maternity Staff/Leadership in the progression of LDMS activities. This will include leading night shift huddle boards, supporting staff as they utilize A-3 thinking to solve OFI’s and doing process observations.

5 Works collaboratively with the Director, Clinical Educators, and Managers to develop guidelines and protocols for standards of care based on EBP and research.

6 Uses outcome driven data and Nursing Sensitive Indicators to drive and improve care.

7 Analyzes Patient Experience data to identify areas for improvement and work within the unit’s SDM structure to reach targets.

8 Serves as a resource and a positive role model while providing staff education. Creates opportunities to coach, teach and mentor.

9 Partners with the Nurse Managers and Nurse Educators to ensure the appropriate orientation and competencies are completed so the staff can demonstrate safe and competent care.

10 Participates in the growth and professional development of staff by encouraging and supporting advancement through the clinical ladder.

11 Participates actively in the staff’s annual Performance Evaluation providing feedback and coaching to promote accountability and supporting a healthy work environment.

12 Uses Just Culture to resolve performance issues, patient concerns, and resolving conflict.

13 Demonstrates a commitment to the patients and visitor’s through patient rounding. Uses this information to improve the patient experience.

14 Demonstrates a commitment to the staff through leader rounding. Uses this information to identify and address operational problems and other barriers impeding care.

15 Ensures care provided is consistent with established staffing guidelines and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

The following are common expectations:

16 Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).

17 Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and “error proof” systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and rot cause analyses as required.

18 Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.

19 Maintains established policies and procedures, objective, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

20 Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

21 Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility though improvement and innovation.

The following are nonessential job accountabilities for ADA purposes:

22 Attends meetings as required. Chair and/or serves on appropriate committees as requested. Performs other related duties as identified.

Required Skills

RN License in PA required

NRP certification

BSN required


Required Experience

2 years of experience in Maternity & GYN surgery required
