Trinity Health Cyto-Technologist in Wilmington, Delaware

Applies technical knowledge and skills to perform routine staining, mounting, and special procedures to detect evidence of cancer and other pathological conditions in body fluids and tissue. Exercises independent professional judgment in determining the acceptability of results prior to release to the patient record or for pathologist review. Produces accurate and complete results. Performs quality control testing in accordance with established protocols. Performs and documents corrective action as needed. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots complex laboratory instruments. Maintains laboratory records and computer files for the cytopathology section.

Retrieves and reviews slides on atypical or suspicious and malignant cases. Effectively interprets and communicates laboratory results, procedures, and policies to physicians and other appropriate health care practitioners and obtains diagnostic information on cases submitted as needed. Recognizes critical conditions and responds appropriately. Manages infectious specimens, hazardous chemicals and potentially dangerous instruments in accordance with hospital and departmental policies in order to maintain a safe work environment. Assists physicians with fine needle aspirate collection at the patient bedside.

Modifies work schedule, methods or behavior when necessary in order to adapt to various situations and changing work demands. Demonstrates professional, friendly, courteous, interpersonal skill in interactions with hospital staff, supervisory staff, co-workers, customers, and patients/family members. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications_(Education/Experience/Licensure/Certification/Skills)_:

  • *Baccalaureate degree in a biological or chemical science, and a graduate of an approved school of cytology with CT (ASCP) certification.*
  • *Thorough understanding of all routine, new and special procedures and theory required for application and development of procedures to the laboratory. Use of independent judgment, evaluation and performance of all procedures.*
  • Ability to evaluate cellular desquamation of GYN and non-GYN material and apply diagnostic criteria to each slide examined. Performance of cytological procedures requires a high level of skill and use of independent visual judgment.
  • Experience with laboratory information system (Cerner) highly desirable. Computer proficiency with Microsoft (MS) Windows, MS Excel and MS Word required.
