Trinity Health Senior Clinical Advisor - Critical Care/ Telemetry in Waterbury, Connecticut

General Statement of Duties

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Senior Clinical Advisor collaborates to provide continuity of patient care by insuring adequate resources are available on a shift-to-shift basis; off shift and weekends/holidays the Senior Clinical Advisor is the nursing management representative on site. The Senior Clinical Advisor collaborates with the health care team to plan and coordinate the timely admission, transfer and discharge of patients. The Senior Clinical Advisor collaborates with other members of nursing leadership to create an environment that promotes excellence in clinical practice. This includes contributing to the development of nursing goals: procedures and standards of care; and opportunities for professional growth and development. The Senior Clinical Advisor provides clinical support as the nurse responder when a patient’s condition has changed as part of the Rapid Response Team. Has working knowledge of policies, procedures and guidelines.

Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Supervises professional, technical, clerical and ancillary staff to ensure quality patient care delivery to patients of all ages.
  • Provides patient care, performs treatments and procedures and uses equipment appropriately according to specific standards, procedures and protocols for the defined age group of clinical area, as evidenced by chart documentation and/or direct observation.
  • Manages the patient care activities on the off shift/weekends/holidays. Assesses the number and level of personnel required to provide quality service based on staffing standards. Assigns float and system resource nurses, secretaries and nursing assistants to nursing units, taking into consideration staffing needs, patient’s acuity, level of skill of the employee so that assignments can be completed on time.
  • Responds to emergency situations and manages direct patient care as the RN member of the Rapid Response Team. Collects and maintains Rapid Response Team data. Documents Rapid Response Team activities and outcomes and performs impact analysis.
  • Functions as a clinical resource to staff for complex patient care situations by teaching, coaching and mentoring.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership to enhance professional practice, patient and staff satisfaction.
  • Contributes to the effective management of the Department and the Hospital. Assumes responsibility for emergency hospital situations until designated administrator is contacted.
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and competence. Demonstrates commitment to professional self-development by maintaining current competence through selective readings, outside conference attendance, advanced education, certification and participating in hospital based management programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Credentials and Abilities.***

  • Progressive nursing experience in a variety of settings including medical/surgical and supervision.
  • Possesses knowledge of leadership and management skills
  • Excellent skills in communication, and collaboration
  • Ability to oversee clinical activities
  • Demonstrated experience in responsive customer service
  • Skills in coaching, teaching, mentoring and problem solving
  • Ability to act in a professional capacity and serve as a professional role model.
  • Working knowledge/competence with national standards, i.e. DPH, TJC, CMS
  • Ability to utilize sound interpersonal skills when interacting with all levels of internal and external customers taking into consideration cultural, linguistic and age of customer.

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing (BSN preferred) with current Connecticut License.
  • Knowledge of current nursing, medical and health trends and practices.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in utilization of the nursing process in rendering of patient care.
  • Demonstrates leadership and management skills including communication, problem solving, and decision-making.
  • Ability to act in a professional capacity and serve as a professional role model.
  • Creating an environment that ensures the delivery of safe and high-quality patient care, high patient satisfaction rates, and positive patient outcomes.
  • Required to implement policy changes that are often driven by regulatory agencies, such as state health departments and the Joint Commission.
