Trinity Health Unit Assistant - Farren in Turner Falls, Massachusetts

Location: Farren Care Center The Unit Assistant is responsible for completing a variety of activities and tasks in order to assist all of the nursing units to aid in the care of residents and families. This role is a member of the designated care team functioning under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. The Unit Assistant is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives, quality initiatives and policies of the department.

*PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:*

Demonstrates, promotes and integrates the Sisters of Providence Care Centers Mission and core values by:

Observing residents and reporting any reactions or changes in condition to appropriate personnel by utilizing the stop and watch form. Escorting residents to and from the dining room for meals. Distributing and collecting meal trays as assigned on unit. Feeding and assisting residents for meal intake as outlined by their care plans. Recording intake of solids and fluids. Distributing nourishments and fluids to residents as assigned. Reporting to Nursing if meals or nourishment are refused by the resident (i.e. diabetic residents) Assisting in transporting resident to and from activities and programs as required Assisting in maintaining the orderliness of the resident’s room. May include stripping and making bed, packing/unpacking clothing or personal items, assisting resident with organizing closets/drawers, marking personal items and removing or placing name tags and other identifying items in resident’s room. Assisting with securing clean linen for the unit and depositing soiled linen in the appropriate receptacle location. Responsible to answer call bells in a timely manner. Assisting residents as able or those seeking assistance to meet the resident’s needs. Following all safety, security, Infection Control (including Universal Precautions) and hazardous materials policies and procedures. Performing all tasks in order to ensure resident and personal safety and the protection of co-workers and facility property. Completing all required competencies and maintaining required certifications. Attending all mandatory educational programs. Regularly attending a minimum of four (4) staff meetings a year. Escorting residents, in medical transportation, to doctor’s appointments and activities on or off facility grounds. Ensuring that resident equipment, such as wheelchairs and lifts are clean and in good working order.

*REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:*

Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles and concepts acquired by obtaining a high school diploma or GED in order to complete in-service and daily documentation requirements.

Requires successful completion of facility paid Feeding Assistant program.

Must have the ability to read, write and converse in English. A second language is helpful.

Interpersonal skills necessary to relate to persons of varying age, culture, religion, and/or ability.

*WORKING CONDITIONS:*

Requires prolonged standing, bending, pushing, squatting, twisting, walking, or other constant physical movements on a regular basis; or frequent lifting of moderately heavy items 40 pounds or greater.

Some physical inconvenience or discomfort; routinely present in the work situation (i.e., moderately noisy, or odors).

Requires exposure to blood and various body fluids, which require caution and use of established safety guidelines and equipment.

Work requires some irregularity in scheduled hours because of overtime requirements, including weekend rotation, or occasional stress due to periodic cyclical workload pressures. During the event of an emergency, essential staff may be required to extend their shift.

*REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:*

Reports directly to the assigned Unit Nurse Manager with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Nursing Supervisor.

Has no responsibility for the direct supervision of any other employees.
