Assists in the coordination of Surgical Scheduling in the smooth operation of the booking office in order to contribute to the Mission and goals of MIMA. Provides guidance to all Physician offices to maintain OR schedule and cases for surgery.

*PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: *

Answers all incoming phone calls in a professional, courteous, and timely manner on an as needed basis.

Responsible for scheduling surgeries according to block time utilization and accommodating those physicians that do not have block time. Prioritizes the needs of surgeon’s offices.

Incorporates knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedures along with an understanding of anesthetics in order to support surgical procedures. Differentiates between open and laparoscopic surgeries and schedules accordingly.

Schedules surgeries based on a strong understanding of what equipment and/or implants are needed, potential conflicts that may arise, as well as accurate timelines allotted for each procedure and surgeon.

Understands each surgeon’s procedures and the support needed for each specialty. Accurately identifies all case specialty needs and concerns and acts accordingly.

Expertly handles computer programs such as, Meditech, Outlook, and PICIS.

Receives and inputs the surgeon’s office faxes for booking of procedures and returns them in a timely manner.

Applies knowledge of surgical codes for each case.

Confirms cases daily to identify correct data, including date, time, and specific procedure. Ensures the OR schedule is faxed daily to multiple departments.

Schedules pre-admission testing for all surgical patients as needed.

Covers various assignments and provides clerical support to all operative services as requested.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Work requires the knowledge normally acquired through achieving a High School diploma or GED.

Proficient knowledge of Medical Terminology required. Requires a good understanding of surgical procedures.

Requires excellent computer knowledge and skills particularly in programs such as Meditech, Outlook and PICIS.

Excellent organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Requires prolonged sitting with some eye or ear strain due to consistent computer use.

A few unpleasant conditions routinely present, i.e., cramped working space, drafty area, poor lighting, inadequate equipment or furnishing.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Office Supervisor of the Orthopedic Care Center

Has no responsibility for the direct supervision of any employees.
