Trinity Health Assistant Nurse Manager - Endoscopy - FT Day shift in Springfield, Massachusetts
Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, assists in the management of unit personnel and the nursing unit environment. Collaborates with patients, families, peers, physicians and other members of the health care team in the delivery of health care services to all ages of patients. Position requires working as hospital administrative supervisor.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Contributes to the effective management of the nursing unit.Assumes a leadership role in two units. Assists Nurse Manager in strategic planning process for nursing unit by participation in the identification of short- and long-term goals.
Assists with the management of clinical operations.Supports and participates in Clinical Program Management activity.Coordinates patient care assignments which reflect patient acuity, developmental age nurse-patient ratio, and individual staff abilities.Assists Nurse Manager in planning budgetary needs of unit related to human resources, environment, equipment and supplies.
Supports Nurse Manager in evaluating patient care and use of nursing process and implementation plan, by direct observation, chart audit, patient/family interview, and participation in patient rounds. Guides direct patient plan of care activities with staff as needed.
Actively participates in Continuous Quality Improvement Program as evidenced by taking a leadership role in unit or institutional CQI activities. Collaborates in implementation and ongoing evaluation of a nursing unit-based Quality Improvement Program which results in at least two audits with action plans/year.
Acts as a clinical role model for staff by demonstrating awareness of current knowledge and technological trends related to clinical area; assists staff in applying findings to clinical practice as evidenced by ongoing review/revision of patient care standards.
Assists in management of human resources to provide for the delivery of safe, cost effective patient care.Participates in planning for unit staffing needs according to unit standards on a short- and long-term basis.
Participates in activities directed at recruitment, hiring, and retention of unit staff. Participates in orientation activities for new colleagues, according to unit and Department of Nursing policies.
Collects and records data regarding staff's performance after conferring with Nurse Manager or Director.Collaborates with the Director/Nurse Managers in evaluation of colleague performance by completing assigned annual performance appraisals and reviewing evaluations with Staff. Works together with Director/Nurse Manager on any labor relations issues/concerns during their shift.
Identifies and reports need for colleague counseling/disciplinary action with Nurse Manager. Initiates counseling/disciplinary action in absence of Nurse Manager, after conferring with Director of Inpatient Nursing.
Assists Nurse Manager in managing staff productivity and compliance with polices related to budgeted hours; holds staff accountable for completing work within schedule timeframes.Understands and supports hospital productivity system.Maintains integrity of system by prompt reporting of scores through effective monitoring and reliability as delegated by Nurse Manager.
Notifies Nurse Manager of unusual conditions involving staff, patients, visitors, or colleagues.Uses appropriate channels of communication to problem solve nursing unit issues. Contributes to effective communication and information sharing among staff by participating in/or conducting monthly unit meetings.
Works with Nurse Manager, Director, HUB Coordinator and House Supervisors in ensuring timely patient flow throughout the hospital.
Initiates educational/in-service programs within nursing unit, and participates in approved projects to enhance unit/staff development, in order to promote clinical and leadership skills.Supports nursing research by accurately collecting data, by coordinating product/procedure trials, and summarizing results to support conclusions.
Demonstrates compliance with all regulatory agencies to include OHSA, EPA, DEP and state and federal agencies.
Provides administrative supervisionfor the Mercy Hospital, Inc. during non-business hours:
- Ensures operational functioning of the hospital during non-business hours.Directs, organizes, plans and coordinates overall activities of the Hospital.
- Maintains efficient utilization of nursing resources; makes staffing adjustments based on census and acuity; monitors and approves overtime usage.
- Assists in the resolution of issues relating to physicians, patients, families and staff and performs investigations pertaining to incidents /occurrences during their shift as well as reporting to Administrator on call.Maintains a safe environment for all patients, visitors and hospital personnel.Takes corrective action when necessary.
- Acts as a public relations person for the organization.Maintains patient confidentiality and communicates in a professional manner at all times.
- Frequently consults with Directors/Administrators regarding Program specific details and hospital operations. Disseminates information and facilitates conversation with staff on organizational/department changes, projects, etc.
- Facilitates the problem-solving process by guiding, counseling, teaching and assisting hospital personnel.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of drug usage and interactions as evidenced by assisting staff in appropriate and timely interventions.
Demonstrates commitment to growth and professional development through attending all mandatory and voluntary hospital based in-services and educational programs designed to enhance clinical and managerial skills.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.Bachelor's degree in nursing strongly preferred.Currently registered in Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Minimum of three (3) year's demonstrated clinical experience required.Prior supervisory or lead experience strongly preferred. Knowledge of current nursing, medical and health trends and practices.
CPR certification required; ACLS, PALS, PEARS certification preferred.
Demonstrated clinical competence in utilization of the nursing process in rendering of patient care.Able to anticipate and positively react to technical, organizational and administrative issues.
Demonstrated leadership, judgment, and management skills including communication, problem-solving, and decision-making.Ability to act in a professional capacity and serve as a professional role model.
Position requires ability to frequently push/pull/lift light objects more than 50 lbs.
Performs difficult manipulative, arm-hand steadiness, and hand-eye coordination skills.Walk, stand and sits for prolonged periods. Extensive mobility is required. Sees objects closely and far away, and hears normal sounds with some background noises.
Position requires ability to concentrate on fine details with interruptions and attends to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time.Must be able to understand and relate to theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given long periods of time.
Requires being in a patient care setting where colleague is exposed to blood, body tissues or fluids.May frequently be exposed to electromagnetic radiation from VDTs.
Reports to the Nurse Manager.
Responsible for direct supervision of 5 to 100+ colleagues.
