Job Summary

The Diehl Lab invites applicants for a laboratory technician position to study histone post-translational modifications including their regulation and role in epigenetics. Duties will include bacterial cloning, peptide synthesis, protein expression and purification, tissue culture, western blotting, and other biochemical assays. Responsibilities will be modified as the technician gains experience in the lab.

Responsibilities

1.Performs laboratory research as directed by the supervisor(s)

2.Analyzes data and maintains a detailed research record

3.Orders supplies and materials needed for research

4.Contributes to general laboratory maintenance and general reagent production as needed

5.Maintains the physical environment of the lab and a safe research environment

6.Reads the literature and does background preparatory work to enrich the experience

7.Attends laboratory meetings, presents data, and participates in discussions

8.May coauthor research papers and publications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

1.Prior experience in a research laboratory setting

2.Experience with some of the following techniques: peptide synthesis, protein expression and purification, molecular cloning, biochemical assays, tissue culture

3.Demonstrated skill in written and verbal communication

4.Demonstrated ability to work independently and ask for guidance when needed
