UNIVERSITY OF UTAH , SALT LAKE CITY , UT — ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR : The University of Utah Department of Philosophy, in collaboration with the Office of Research Integrity and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, seeks to hire a tenure-line professor at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin in Fall 2020. AoS is open, with a particular interest in applicants who engage with ethical issues that arise in the practice of research. Backgrounds might include expertise in philosophy of medicine, ethics, philosophy of law, medical ethics, philosophy of science, applied ethics, and research ethics, to name a few. We welcome applications from scholars ranging from graduate students expecting to defend their PhD by Summer 2020, to more established tenured faculty. Qualified candidates will be considered for appointments with tenure or advanced tenure clocks.
There is now widespread academic interest in the range of ethical issues that arise during the conception, design, conduct, and reporting of research—for example: questions about data management, concerns about authorship standards, difficulties associated with multi-institutional collaborations, strategies for minimizing cases of research misconduct, and commitments to the protection of human research participants. The Department of Philosophy, the Office of Research Integrity, and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science are collaborating on building a Research Ethics Consultation ( REC ) program at the University of Utah, which will work with faculty, students, and staff on identifying and responding to research ethics issues that they encounter. We are seeking candidates to join this effort. The successful applicant will work with existing Office of Research Integrity leadership to develop an REC infrastructure and culture on campus. This will include consulting and training with national REC groups, while working closely with local units on campus. Longer term, we envision the successful applicant leading the REC on campus, and developing a research and graduate program that trains the next generation of REC professionals and scholars in a collaborative manner between the Office of Research Integrity, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and the Department of Philosophy. We recognize that this transition will take time, mentorship, and integration into the University community.
The successful applicant’s tenure home will be in the Department of Philosophy. This will include a 2/2 teaching load, where one of those courses each semester will be the University’s ‘Responsible Conduct of Research’ training for graduate students (currently designated as a 1-credit course). Other duties will include graduate advising, departmental service, conducting guest lectures through Research Education, collaborating on research initiatives, and assisting with research ethics consultations.
