University of Utah Assistant-Associate-Full Professor in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CVEEN) at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Structural Engineering related to hazard resilient and sustainable infrastructure systems with a start date of August 16, 2016. The position is anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor level although outstanding candidates at other levels are encouraged to apply. This position is part of the University of Utahs priority to build a diverse faculty; thus, female and minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Position Description - The successful applicant will be required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses within CVEEN, develop an externally-funded research program, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and provide departmental, college and university service. An earned doctorate in Civil and Environment Engineering or a closely aligned field before the date of hire is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies are also necessary. Next generation infrastructure systems, encompassing smart sensing networks, will require innovations in civil engineering materials, construction, and simulation using complex combinations of computational and experimental techniques. To address the transformative leaps in engineering technologies, innovative research and teaching approaches will require inspirational leaders with adaptive abilities in areas including (but not limited to): Characterization, analysis, and synthesis of novel structural materials and systems at a variety of scales and temporal levels through experimental and-or computational approaches; Testing, analysis, and design of smart buildings capable of retaining functionality after exposure to large external loads caused by blast impacts, earthquakes, or other hazards; Development of computational techniques for the design of safer, more energy efficient, and environmentally friendly structural materials, members and systems; Stochastic modeling of new materials and structural systems at all scales for hazard and risk mitigation; Multi-scale experimental testing related to nonlinear performance and cascading effects; Development of multi-functional structural faade elements that serve multiple functions including structural resistance, remote sensors, and energy capture. Candidates with strong core fundamentals that allow them to work across disciplinary boundaries are particularly encouraged to apply. Intellectual depth, innovation and promise of candidates are of higher priority than their specific research areas. Part of the Pac-12 Conference, the University of Utah is a Carnegie Research-Extensive University located in Salt Lake City at the foothills of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. The CVEEN department is one of seven rapidly growing departments within the College of Engineering. In the past decade, the number of tenure-track faculty positions has grown by 50% and research expenditures have more than tripled, to $81.5 million per year, placing our College in the top 30 engineering universities in the country for research volume.
