Microsoft Corporation Program Manager 2 in Redmond, Washington

The Group: Capacity Planning (‘CP’) is the group that plans cloud server capacity for Microsoft online services. It's a massive, global footprint - growing rapidly as Microsoft and our customers pivot fully to the cloud. It also costs billions to build and operate annually, so the opportunity for business impact is enormous. Although we are part of Azure, we support all Microsoft Cloud services including Office 365, Xbox Live, Windows Update, Bing and more.

The Team: We are the O365 & New Region / AZ Capacity Planning team within CP. We orchestrate and create the plan of record for forward-looking server capacity needs. Our plans are the basis for billions of dollars in CapEx spend, supplier agreements and long-term component supply strategies; not to mention supporting the worldwide customers of Microsoft's online services. Creating this plan requires us to wear multiple hats. On the business side, we work with several product & process teams to align on the demand forecast, engineering assumptions, data center capacity and HW lifecycle management. On the engineering side, we work with multiple evolving input and output systems. On the financial side, we work with our partners to provide outlook to the fiscal year budget including risks and opportunities.

The Role: Everyone on our team has a role to play in creating the monthly server supply plan. We begin with scenario planning and continue through constraint application, new product planning, cross functional alignment and quality control culminating in financial handoff and publication to Supply Chain Execution. Given the growth rate of our business, we need to do all this under tight deadlines and do more, better, faster every cycle. Our team is thoroughly cross-trained, so expect to work in many of these sub functions.


Specifically, you will be responsible for developing and delivering the capacity plan needed to launch New Regions / New Availability Zones / New Data Centers on time. Additionally, you’ll help the team define the processes and KPI’s for this area and drive projects to automate both of these deliverables. You will be critical in building out this white space.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement First Footprint Requirements for the successful launch of New Regions, New Availability Zones and New Data Centers.

  • Serve as the interface between the Planning team and Software Engineering team. Collect the business requirements for new features from the planning team and execute User Acceptance Testing.

  • Improve Business Intelligence capabilities across Medium Term Planning team to ensure scalable and repeatable analysis.

  • Cross train on multiple capacity planning functions to provide team depth



  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field

  • 1 to 3 years of program management / supply chain planning / business planning experience

  • Proficiency on Enterprise Planning systems (such as SAP, Oracle, E2Open, etc.), business intelligence engines (SQL, Power BI, Power Pivot, Tableau, etc.) and supply chain experiences are highly desired for this role.
