The Substrate Intelligence Core Fabric team is the backbone of M365 Copilot experiences. It enables things like the creation of AI datasets, fine-tuned models, run model evaluation, and create the knowledge that powers Copilot experiences across M365. This role offers an unparalleled opportunity to influence the trajectory of Microsoft's AI and data capabilities. As the Principal Group Engineering Manager for the Core SIP (Substrate Intelligence Platform), you will be the engineering leader of a dynamic team of a large team of engineers and you will be responsible for the leadership of the software architecture, development and quality assurance for the services that power these capabilities while obsessing with security, compliance and honoring the customer trust. We are looking for a leader with experience with both agile and traditional software methodologies and the ability to guide the organization to achieve strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements within and across teams for multiple solutions or product lines.

  • Oversees teams and provides technical leadership for identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.

  • Optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).

  • Oversees teams to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items in coordination with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) across products.

  • Leads the resolution of complex site incidents and oversees for Designated Responsible Individuals (DRI) and directs the work of other engineers across product lines.

  • Keeps informed of and communicates new standards to ensure that the product development and scaling to customer requirements and applies best practices for meeting scaling needs and performance expectations and holds accountability for products that do not meet expectations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 7+ years of experience in leading large engineering teams of 50 or more in the development of complex, large-scale services.

  • 3+ years experience and deep understanding of Big Data technologies, ETL (Extract Transform Load) processes, data management, cloud services and Azure.

  • 3+ years experience in leading teams that develop infrastructure critical to AI and data-driven initiatives.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science

  • OR related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 6+ years people management experience.

  • A proven track record of success in leading teams that develop infrastructure critical to AI and data-driven initiatives.

Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
