Trinity Health Director, Nursing in Pontiac, Michigan

I Accountability Objectives:

The Director is accountable to the Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer for planning, organizing, leading and evaluating the operations of several patient care areas in order to assure optimal patient outcomes, nurse and patient satisfaction, and to continuously improve care and care processes as prescribed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Practice and Professional Performance.

In addition, the Director is accountable to practice in accordance with the standards established/endorsed by St Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) leadership and by external regulators and accreditation agencies. The Director actively promotes the SJMO Model of Care and the nursing profession, in fulfillment of the SJMO Quality Plan for Nursing. The Director is accountable to drive nursing practice through facilitation of shared governance. The Director is expected to abide by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses. The Director fosters integration of care processes on their units and within other units, departments within the St. Joseph Mercy Oakland.

II Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

A. Education

  • **Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree required.

  • **Masters degree preferred.

  • **Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

B. Licensure / Certification

  • **Current licensure to practice nursing in Michigan.

  • **Certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization is preferred.

  • **Membership in a professional nursing organization is preferred.

C Special Skill / Aptitudes

Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.

High level of interpersonal skills and communication skills, e.g., oral and written, necessary in order to effectively supervise and motivate subordinates, gather and exchange information with both internal and external individuals.

Able to prepare a variety of reports related to departmental activities and facilitate inter and intra disciplinary rapport.

Analytical skills needed in order to: engage in a variety of program planning, problems solving and decision making activities; assess effectiveness of subordinates; as well as to participate in the development of division goals and objectives.

Ability to use critical thinking, logic and reasoning to**address complex situations.

Ability to serve as a teacher and mentor to care team members to advance the profession of nursing and optimize patient outcomes, and nurse and patient satisfaction.

Ability to organize and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

Analytical skills necessary to organize and oversee care team members and assist in developing and administering policies, procedures and budgets.

Excellent interpersonal skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.

Continuously seeks opportunities to improve the quality of patient care delivery through the innovative and creative resolution finding.

D. Experience

Three years experience in a nursing management role, with demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing practice, the fundamentals of departmental operations, personnel management and budgeting.

III Duties / Responsibilities:

Develops strategic goals and programs which actively support the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization, and the Quality Plan for Nursing.

Demonstrates principles of Relationship-based Care to cultivate and 2 maintain therapeutic relationships.

Uses data and evidence to guide best practice and continuous improvement.

Assures the integration of technology to support patient care and nursing practice.

Utilizes process excellence tools and processes to improve the quality of patient care delivery.

Accountable for implementation and monitoring achievement of organizational goals as outlined in the Quality Plan for Nursing.

Develops and monitors budgets. Analyzes variances and develops an action plan for improvement.

Accountable for resource planning to advance nursing practice, quality of care, nurse and patient satisfaction.

Leads organizational initiatives that promote patient and workplace safety, optimal patient outcomes, and satisfaction.

Contributes to the positive image of nursing and enhances the SJMO culture of excellence by modeling professional behavior both in the organization and the community.

Continuously seeks opportunities to enhance one’s own professional practice through membership in a professional nursing organization and involvement in community activities.

Fosters partnerships with physicians and other care team members that result in effective planning and implementation of care processes for groups of patients.

Effectively manages issues and conflicts that impact patient care processes, affect customer satisfaction, or have ethical/legal ramifications. Mentors care team members in the areas of conflict resolution, problem-solving, and customer relations

Ensures development and implementation of improvement plans based on established standards that address the needs of the patient population and incorporate process improvement philosophy and techniques.

Mentors care team members in the application of process excellence techniques into daily routines.
