Position: Lead Painter & Coatings Applicator

Reports to: Plant Manager


The Lead Painter & Coatings Applicator will lead the coatings operation to ensure coatings are applied safely, on time, within established budget, and with the highest level of quality standards.

Essential Functions

  • Lead coating and blasting operations

  • Utilize airless paint sprayer for painting metal fabrication projects

  • Utilize sand blasting system

  • Responsible for the planning and execution of the procedures required for successful completion of specified coating systems

  • Assess, measure and document the specified surface prep, application prep, curing and handling of coated surfaces

  • Interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and understand how to handle paint, thinner and other chemicals in a safe and productive manner

  • Train & lead others in coating and blasting operations

  • Ensure all work is done in accordance with the appropriate quality control requirements

  • Ensure work is completed as required to meet the schedule requirements of the projects

  • Refer to relevant drawings, charts, etc. to understand and plan painting procedures.

  • Work with Project Management and Plant Manager to set, review and update budgets as needed and communicate budget goals to project team to ensure budgets are maintained

  • Estimate time and quantities of materials required

  • Comply with safe painting practices and environmental standards

Supervisory Responsibility This position is responsible for the oversight and performance management of teammates directly reporting to this position. Position TypeThis is an hourly, non-exempt position. Travel

Minimal, primarily limited to Northeast job site locations.

Education and Experience

  • NACE Level I certification required

  • Experience using airless sprayer is highly preferred

  • Previous experience spray painting structural steel

  • Previous experience sand blasting structural steel

  • Previous experience with sophisticated coatings systems

  • 5-10 years’ experience in coating operations. Experience with leading others

    Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25-30 pounds

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, and safely maneuver around a fabrication shop

  • Able to climb temporary or permanent stairs, and ladders

  • Able to bend, squat, kneel, crawl, crouch, balance and stoop,

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
