SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Serves as an Amtrak nationwide Industrial Hygiene subject matter expert and will assist the Sr Mgr Occupational Safety Programs in developing, implementing, and maintaining Amtrak's company-wide Occupational Safety Program to: 1) provide the highest degree of safety and health for employees; 2) identify hazards and minimize employee injuries and risks; and 3) comply with all regulations, standards and guidelines governing occupational safety and health. Provides technical expertise and guidance to field staff across Amtrak for ergonomic, industrial hygiene, and safety matters relating to OSHA and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Conducts on-site visits to identify and evaluate ergonomic, safety, and health hazards and recommends engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment requirements to protect employees. Provides technical expertise and guidance to locations and field staff for ergonomic, industrial hygiene, occupational health, safety, and regulatory issues. Supports the Senior Manager Occupational Safety Programs in developing, implementing, and maintaining programs, policies, and processes. Participates in and conducts accident and illness investigations. Manages and analyzes health and safety data to understand and evaluate safety performance. Coordinates ergonomic and industrial hygiene contractor field activities, reviews work proposals, and reviews work product. At the direction of the Medical Department, investigates workplace accident or illness claims. Collaborates with and provides support to Amtrak's Law Department as needed, including providing technical guidance; conducting research of industrial hygiene records and other company safety materials; and providing testimony with regard to claims, legal actions, and OSHA, FRA, and other regulatory citations. Provides guidance and direction on OSHA regulations. Develops and delivers employee communications regarding occupational health and safety issues; develops and presents information and data analysis to management and employees; translates technical information for effective communication to non-technical audiences. Participates in Chemical Task Force activities, reviews safety data sheets for new chemical products, and investigates alleged illnesses related to use of chemical products. Conducts indoor air quality assessments by measuring airborne concentrations of dust, gases, and mists using air sampling instruments and air sampling media. Consults with management, employee representatives, industrial hygiene firms, and other agencies regarding industrial hygiene problems and solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or Safety, or other relevant technical field. American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and 6+ years' experience in t e ergonomic, industrial hygiene, occupational health and/or safety fields. This experience should include a good understanding of OSHA and FRA safety & health regulations, workplace ergonomic, health, and safety hazard identification and control, illness investigation, program and policy implementation, and problem resolution. Experience in conducting training programs, delivering presentations, and developing communications on technical industrial hygiene and safety topics to non-technical audiences. Ability to work independently. Good organization skills. Good understanding of OSHA and FRA safety and health regulations and their application in the workplace. Experience in identifying workplace ergonomic, health, and safety hazards, the procedures and techniques used to evaluate these hazards, and in identifying/developing engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment requirements to reduce or eliminate exposure. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated skills using PC-based spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel, Access); Microsoft Word, PowerPoint.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in handling ergonomic issues in industrial, shop, or transportation settings. Experience in working with asbestos. Experience as an expert witness and in giving depositions. Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

WORK ENVIORNMENT: Flexibility to change work priorities on a frequent basis to respond to requests for assistance and respond to short-term deadlines. Frequent sitting, standing, and walking. Must be able to walk around Amtrak facilities and grounds, walk upstairs, walk on uneven surfaces (ballast) on rail rights of way and yards, and in tunnels. Ability to climb ladders into locomotive cabs, rail cars, and rail equipment cabs, when required. Frequent, extensive, use of computer keyboard, monitor and mouse. Ability to lift and carry items, usually <25 lbs. Includes being able to carry and use ergonomic or industrial hygiene field monitoring equipment. Frequent travel by rail, road, or air as required.

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The salary/hourly range is$94,300 - $122,256, Pay is based on several factors includingbut not limited to education, work experience, certifications,internal equity,etc.Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider ageo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offeradditional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees,including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual andcompany performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/orlong-term incentive plan compensation.
