UnitedHealth Group Vice President, Strategy and Payer Engagement (Surgical Care Affiliates) - California in Pasadena, California

SCA, a leader in the outpatient surgery industry, strategically partners with health plans, medical groups and health systems across the country to develop and optimize surgical facilities. SCA operates more than 210 surgical facilities, including ambulatory surgery centers and surgical hospitals, in partnership with approximately 7,500 physicians. With over 50% of SCA facilities participating in value-based agreements, SCA leads the industry in payment innovation and value-based care. Given SCA’s unique position as an Optum Care entity, the coordination and partnership with risk bearing medical groups has accelerated the ability to achieve the quadruple aim of our facilities. The position will enable SCA to achieve earnings growth by partnering with operations and development leaders, as well as our partnership with medical groups, to set and execute a strategy that evolves payer contracting into value-based agreements driving improved targeted volume growth initiatives, and strategic acquisitions.

The role will report into our Pasadena California regional office or can be remote if already in the CA/West coast geography.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Develop Differentiated Payer Relationships : Teammate will become viewed by health plans as a partner in problem solving and agent of change in the market.

  • Deliver Rate Growth and Acceleration of value-based care: Teammate will achieve growth on the defined regions (CA, OR, UT, HI, NM, NV, AZ, AK, WA) by leading a team responsible for direct contracting and/or supporting the efforts of our health system partners. Teammate will strategize and operationalize the transition of fee for service contracting into value-based care.

  • Enable Organizational Alignment to Grow Revenue: The teammate will have ownership for overall rate growth through an active communication strategy that will include the opportunity for new service line growth, payment innovations and market development as aligned with payer partnerships across the defined regions.

  • Enable Strategic Investments : Teammate will partner with Development and Operations to create market strategies, in alignment with payer partnerships, to identify new markets that lead to merger, de novo, and investment opportunities.

  • Leader: Teammate will lead a team of potential managers, directors and analysts to ensure that the full scope of responsibilities and growth opportunities are prioritized, actionable and executes and be responsible for the growth and development of their team.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree or at minimum 10 years of direct experience

  • 5+ years health plan contracting/healthcare operational/consulting experience

  • Travel to health plan meetings, company meetings, center visits, etc. (30%)

  • Knowledge of macro healthcare trends and how to capture the triple aim in new payment methodologies as well as understanding of value based contracting evolution

  • Qualified individuals will possess the following success behaviors and demonstrate the ability to leverage them for successful outcomes across all aspects of the work they perform:

  • Ability to think strategically about markets and identify opportunities and risks within portfolio

  • Ability to heavily leverage data but also translate into understandable action plans for field operations and payer engagement

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as it relates to forming strategy and execution of a growing value-based portfolio to operational and finance leads.Strong relational skills as they relate to external (health plans) as well as internal partners i.e. operational leaders and physician partners

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare experience with contracting, operations and strategy

  • Master's degree
