POSITION PURPOSE

Under limited supervision, coordinates and directs care of patients seen and treated through the Ambulatory Care Department and Surgery Department. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

1.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.

2.

Coordinates and directs care of patients seen and treated through the Ambulatory Care Department and Surgical Department.

3.

Establishes realistic attainable and measureable goals and objectives for the operating room pre-operatively and post-operatively.

4.

Assumes responsibility and accountability for the quality of patient care services delivered. Serves as a resource and consultant for staff members. Works on quality projects to enhance changes to processes.

5.

Is responsible for orientation of new staff, ongoing staff training and competencies and skills validation.

6.

Performs performance evaluations.

7.

Scrubs and/or circulates, or works in the pre-op or post-op areas for equitable share of scheduled cases.

8.

Collaborates with maintenance/biomedical and EVS to maintain a standards for equipment checks, and daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedules.

9.

Schedules patients and procedures, obtains needed referrals and documentation of previous pertinent medical history, lab reports and radiology film and/or reports. Obtains orders for and compiles outpatient charts ready for the impending clinic.

10.

Gathers patient insurance information and provides Utilization Review with the information so they can do pre-certifications for procedures as required.

11.

Assists physicians with procedures done in the emergency room and special procedures room.

12.

Organizes and maintains outpatient charts and files with all necessary information for patients treated in ambulatory care clinics.

13.

Notifies other departments of necessary supplies, equipment, personnel, records needed for specialty clinic. i.e., providers, dietary, therapies, radiology, lab, business office, anesthesia, etc.

14.

Creates charges for ambulatory clinics/surgical procedures and coordinates with business office billing.

15.

Assists Physicians with outreach clinics held on designated days:

Orthopedics Cardiovascular General surgery Gastroenterology Urology Nephrology Oncology/hematology Obstetrics and Gynecology Wound Care Dermatology Pain Management Podiatry

And any other ambulatory services the hospital participates in.

16.

Maintains file/record of future, follow-up recommendations and contacts patients regarding follow-up appointments/ procedures.

Completes records for specialty clinics.

17.

Coordinates with nursing scheduler specific dates, times and number of staff required for each ambulatory clinic and operating room procedure.

18.

Ensure that credentialing records are on file and up to date of contracted providers reporting from various specialty clinics and surgical services.

19.

Coordinates with HR that licensing and proper documentation is in place for each of the staff reporting from various specialty clinic.

20.

Obtains pre-op and pre-procedure orders from ordering providers and gathers any requested testing (lab, EKG, x-rays) and completes orders; i.e., meds to hold.

21.

Educates and instructs patients prior to surgical procedures, endoscopic examinations, and other test procedures that require specific preparations.

Prepares for, assists with and cleans up following procedures. Cleans and disinfects equipment, maintains the instruments, and arranges for repair service as necessary. Provides discharge instructions to patients and does phone follow-up within a few days of hospital discharge to review instructions and answer questions.

Provides post-surgical follow-up calls.

Administers chemotherapy, phlebotomy and conscious sedation for selected patients and does pre and post-treatment evaluations.

23.

Assists in completing orders and administration of medications for patients in outpatient services, i.e., IV starts, port flushes, and outpatient injections.

24.

Assists with care in emergency, surgery and other patient services when needed.

25.

Maintains policies and procedures manual for ambulatory services/surgical services and policies associated with each specialty clinic.

26.

Participates in community health projects when requested.

27.

Assists in annual budget preparation for Ambulatory Care services/Surgical Services. Suggests capital budgetary items and secures bids on capital equipment.

28.

Works with Materials Management and is responsible for ordering and inventory for disposable supplies.

29.

Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in services.

30.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a Registered Nurse with a current applicable state license. Basic Cardiac Life Support, (BCLS), Advanced Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and TNCC required. Requires a minimum of 3-5 years of related clinical experience. May be requested to travel within the Siouxland region. When assigned to travel, a valid driver's license and proof of insurance will be submitted to manager prior to travel. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.
