Project Description:

Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel’s government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provided enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.

The UPF project works on a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off. Start times are flexible but the standard work week is: Monday - Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. The schedule on working Fridays is: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.

Role Overview

  • Has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating Fire Protection issues.

  • Candidate may be required to interface with the fire safety organization, as well as the client.

  • Candidate must be able to support various project needs for design, design review, commissioning, testing, code interpretations, and walk downs at the project locations as needed to support project deadlines.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

  • Accountable for the application of fire safety in the development of structures systems and components, and for the preparation and defense of the fire protection aspects of process and industrial safety documents required for construction and operation.

  • Maintain an awareness of safety issues in all activities.

  • Develop fire protection system acceptance protocols and interface with inspectors, as required for the design, installation, and testing of the fire protection systems.

  • Support DOE or DoD external regulatory agency reviews of the fire protection aspects of safety submittals.

  • Support reviews of fire protection aspects of safety documents; interface with project and functional management and multi-discipline design teams to provide direction, feedback, and validation of engineering and design efforts.

  • Ensure designs are developed in compliance with Project, State, Federal, and U.S. Department of Energy requirements.

  • Provide technical leadership, perform calculations, generate designs, and lead design projects.

  • Perform analysis of plant Fire Protection systems/equipment and potential operational deficiencies, definition of fire protection design and safety envelope requirements, and review of proposed facility designs/modifications for maintainability, operability, and conformance to facility operational and safety requirements.

  • Perform work independently with minimum guidance for assigned tasks and effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers and craft personnel, provide direction to project teams, and to manage multiple tasks requiring varying resources.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited university or college with a minimum of nine (9) years of progressive related experience.

  • US Citizenship is required.

  • Must be able to obtain site security badge for access to work site.

  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education

  • Have or be capable of obtaining a U.S. Professional Engineering license in Fire Protection Engineering within 12 months of hire.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experienced in fire protection technology including performing fire protection hydraulics, building materials selections and associated combustion products identification, plan review, industrial fire protection, and automatic fire alarm and extinguishing systems.

  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Must be familiar with commercial risk management and fire protection protocol.

  • Experience in the application of codes and standards in a highly regulated work environment.

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance is required for some projects.

  • Knowledgeable of the fire, life safety, and building codes (UBC/IBC), including UL and FM standards and Environmental & Nuclear Safety requirements associated with fire protection program implementation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registered Fire Protection Engineer in Fire Protection (Professional Engineers License).

  • Experience as a fire protection engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in fire suppression and fire alarm system design.

  • Experience working on DOE or DOD government projects.
