JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision of the Principle Investigator (PI), plan, conduct and evaluate cell culture and other experiments and assays of varying complexity, including compilation and analysis of data generated. Follow VUMC IACUC and safety protocols. Maintain proper documentation. Assist the PI in mentoring and training student(s) and/or postdoctoral fellow(s) in developing their research projects. Assist the PI with manuscript and grant preparations. Enjoy team work on translationally relevant projects in circulatory arrest and resuscitation science. Previous experience with cell culture experiments is strongly preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Actively participate in daily lab operation and research projects and perform research independently in the absence of the Principle Investigator. Assist with planning, design, and implementation of research projects. Assist with establishing highly complex protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation and analysis procedures.

  2. Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies, equipment and animals; ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments.

  3. Assist PI in development and implementation of research protocols.

  4. Recognize and communicate problems and suggest solutions, assist in modifications.

  5. Maintain personal knowledge of scientific trends through literature, seminars and conferences.

  6. Carry out routine and complex experiments for scientific data collection. Analyze and interpret complex research data.

  7. Compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.

  8. Present research findings as needed. Contribute to research to merit serving as a co-author or first author on research publications, etc. Assist PI in manuscript preparation for scientific journals. Assist PI in writing research grants and contract proposals.

  9. Assist the PI in mentoring and training by supervising undergraduate and/or graduate and/or medical student(s) and assisting postdoctoral fellow(s) in developing their research projects and on specific techniques and protocols. Provide technical guidance to other staff, undergraduate, graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty as required by PI.

Maintain open communication within and between departments and others. Open contact as needed with PI, collaborating professionals, Purchasing, Human Resource Services, Space and Facilities Planning, asset management personnel, Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff, administrative staff relating to budget capabilities. Contact as required with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities (e.g. V.A.), collaborating professionals and vendors.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Understanding of general and specific laboratory procedures, and scientific approach and methodologies. Ability to use independent judgment within limits. Ability to follow research methodology and protocol. Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures. Critical thinking, problem solving, and attentiveness to detail required. Previous experience with cell culture experiments is strongly preferred; and previous work with mice and rats, is preferred but not absolutely necessary (classification based on experience).
