Principal Risk Associate

As a Principal Risk Associate at Capital One you’ll be responsible for working with business partners to identify and mitigate potential risks to Capital One. Principal Risk Associates at Capital One are the front line of defense to ensure our Company remains stable and profitable.

Capital One's Operational and Compliance Risk Management is seeking a Principal Risk Associate to join the Incentive Risk team. The Associate will have the opportunity to apply project or process management, strategic, and analytical skills to some of our highest profile Risk Management portfolios, including implementing solutions to ensure Capital One’s continued stability and success. The Principal Risk Associate will support partnerships with Risk Executives and their teams in an open, collaborative environment where new ideas and solutions are both welcomed and rewarded. The Associate will have exposure across lines of business (LOB) and the opportunity to work with Risk Executives to create and implement innovative solutions to identify and mitigate potential risks to the Company, and will partner with peers and senior leaders, in the first, second, and third lines of defense, to drive consistency across risk functions while also identifying risks across the enterprise.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated professional with excellent process improvement, strategic leadership, analytical, and communication skills. The candidate will be detail-oriented and results focused, and will have a proven record of managing high profile projects.


  • Serve as a cross-LOB liaison, interfacing with the first lines of business and horizontal functions, including Legal, Compliance Ethics and Investigations, Corporate Security Services, Human Resources, Audit, and other risk management entities

  • Gather data and reporting; perform initial analysis or evaluate data provided by team analysts; strong excel skills are preferred

  • Use data analysis to present solutions and drive buy-in from Executives and LOB counterparts

  • Pressure test controls, engineer processes, track issues, and drive improvements

  • Own a diverse portfolio and locate the under-the-radar risks and blind spots

  • Additional Job Description

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Military experience

  • At least 1 year of process management or analysis experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of Financial Services risk management experience

  • At least 3 years of light-weight analysis experience

  • Ability to set direction, manage expectations and lead cross-functional teams

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or equivalent

  • Master of Business Administration or equivalent
