General Summary

The City of Maricopa is hiring a Recreation Coordinator for our Youth and Teen Programs. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, marketing, administering and evaluating programs for youth and teens in the community. The City is looking for a highly motivated and experienced individual to create new programs and grow our current programs for a fast growing community. This position fosters partnerships and collaborates with other city departments, organizations and agencies that represent youth to develop and grow programs. There are expectations to create revenue from these programs. The areas of responsibility include day camps, pre-school programs, after school programs, teen volunteer program, teen council and other youth/teen programs.

The Recreation Coordinator reports to the Recreation Manager.

Incumbents in this class may be rotated or transferred to other facilities and/or assignments based on department or seasonal needs. This class performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the management of the day-to-day operations, financial objectives and marketing of recreation programs and collection of program fees.

  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of the support staff including training, schedules trainings before each season. Performs evaluations after each season and sport.

  • Performs research, analyzes findings and develops innovative recreation programs; monitors and evaluates program outcomes for sustainability.

  • Communicates with staff and other program and operation areas regarding program.

  • Assists in planning the department budget, program and facility cost estimates and provides budgetary oversight.

  • Administers, justifies and monitors budgets for related work areas. Determines

    current and future needs for equipment and programs.

  • Evaluates fees and programs for adult and youth programs for all skills and abilities on a yearly basis.

  • Recruits contracted service providers who are responsible for a variety of recreation programs and vendor services.

  • Monitors the purchase, use and care of facilities and program equipment.

  • Develops and implements systems to improve services and processes.

  • Assists in performing onsite program inspections as well as onsite evaluation to ensure compliance with City of Maricopa program and safety policies and procedures.

  • Coordinates activities with other departments, outside agencies and organizations and performs duties that originate in the Community Services Department.

  • Develops yearly program calendar for area of responsibility.

  • Interprets and enforces department policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Coordinates activities with other departments, outside agencies and organizations and performs duties that originate in the Community Services Department.

  • Acts as liaison to community groups, commissions and agencies.

  • Creates and makes presentations to City Committees, City Council, community groups, and other agencies

Minimum and Preferred Entrance Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Sports Management, or a related field

  • At least three (3) years of related work experience in the recreation field, with one (1) year supervisory experience.

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Licenses or Certifications

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 60 days:

  • A valid Arizona driver's license

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification

  • First Aid certification

  • Preferred Experience

  • Licensed day camp and preschool operations

Vacation: Full time positions accrue 88 hours of vacation leave per year for the first 3 years of service; accruals increase with years of service.

Sick Leave: Full time positions accrue 96 hours of sick leave/year.

Holidays: Full time positions (minimum 40 hours per week) accrue 10 paid holidays and one floating holiday per year. Holidays include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Health Insurance: Positions with a minimum of 40 hours per week are eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits. Paid employee life insurance, AD&D, short and long-term disability benefits for full time positions.

Retirement Benefits: Positions with a minimum of 40 hours per week are eligible for are provided retirement Benefits through ASRS and PSPRS. Part-Time positions that work 20 hours or more in a 20 week period are eligible for ASRS.
