The Marriott International Law Department supports the Company's lodging business. The Europe offices provide legal services for development and lodging operations of all Marriott lodging products in Europe. This position will report to the Vice President & Senior Counsel – Operations & Asset Management. This position is located in London.

The position will be responsible for providing legal services to support the operations and asset management of all Marriott branded lodging products, including owned, leased, franchised and managed, throughout Europe. This position will be responsible for providing legal advice and guidance as well as drafting and negotiating contracts in a wide variety of contexts, including, system wide-initiatives, continent initiatives, above-property programs and services, asset management, work outs, restructurings, contract renewals and terminations, sales and marketing, vendors, consultants, and retail and commercial tenants at hotels. The work principally takes the form of providing commercial transactional support (such as negotiating, drafting and interpreting numerous types of contracts) and providing legal guidance on a variety of matters where knowledge of the hotel industry, Marriott’s strategic objectives, various hotel-related disciplines, and certain legal subjects is essential.

This position will require an ability to deal with a broad array of topics, including system wide initiatives, hotel operations, asset management, sales and marketing, debt and equity financing, risk-management, tax, employment and privacy. This position will require an independent and creative attorney with the ability to manage, structure, negotiate, draft and execute multiple complex transactions; supervise outside counsel; understand and resolve local law issues; manage project budgets; work effectively with owners, franchisees, vendors, consultants, clients and lenders across varied cultures and legal environments, and coordinate employment, tax, insurance and intellectual property issues within Marriott.


  • Excellent academic record (both undergraduate and law school) andat least 6 years in a well-regarded law firm or comparable corporateenvironment.If licensed in the United States, thenactive US Bar membership is required, otherwise, a practicing certificate from anappropriate jurisdiction is required;

  • Strong leadership skills, good judgment, and the ability to thinkstrategically both from a business and legal perspective;

  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of and solve problems, andto expeditiously provide recommendations which are consistent with goodbusiness practices and common sense;

  • Ability to think creatively, to supervise multiple and complexmatters, and to work independently and effectively with clients, peers, andother parties;

  • Outstanding analytical, contract drafting and negotiating skills;

  • Ability to integrate and balance priorities, work activities andresources for the benefit of multiple key stakeholders;

  • Constructive approach to dealing with conflict, and ability toinfluence and achieve successful results without damaging relationships;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively,work diplomatically, and foster relationships with individuals at all levels;

  • Committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards and actingwith integrity;

  • Self-starter with a high degree of resourcefulness, high energy,drive, and poise under pressure;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;

  • Experience in Employment or Privacy matters advantageous;

  • Fluency in one other European language in addition to Englishadvantageous;

The primaryresponsibilities of this attorney will be:

  • Support the operations and asset management of all Marriottbranded lodging products, including owned, leased, franchised and managed,throughout Europe;

  • Reviewing, interpreting and advising on management and franchiseagreements and coordinating with other departments;

  • Represent Marriott with respect to existing management andfranchise agreement issues such as restructurings, workouts, hotel sales,financings, and contract interpretations, amendments, and terminations;

  • Provide legal support on particular contracts or specific issuesas part of a broader team that provides general legal guidance to certaincorporate departments or disciplines on various system-wide issues andinitiatives;

  • Provide general legal guidance to local hotels, General Managers,and Area Vice Presidents related to operations, finance, and other legalissues;

  • Upon request, provide support and assistance for specific projectswhich have impact and application across multiple hotel properties, includingstructuring above-property programs and services;

  • Structure, draft and negotiate a wide variety of contractsincluding, sales and marketing, vendors, consultants, procurement, and food& beverage agreements; and

  • Provide such other support as may be requested including withrespect to Employment and Privacy matters.
