Engineering Equipment Helpers operate heavy gasoline or diesel powered equipment consisting of motor graders, tractors with attachments, dozer tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, excavators and brush cutters to reconstruct and maintain gravel or surfaced highways and timber access roads. Although the primary responsibility is the operation of equipment, some manual labor may be necessary such as painting guideposts, loading and unloading materials, cleaning culverts, and clearing brush from guard rails and signposts.

MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Employees required to operate a motor vehicle must be at least 18.
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work may take place in extremely remote environments and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.
You will be evaluated on your ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Qualifications will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. We must be able to determine that you meet the experience requirement- please be sure to include this information in your resume. Qualifications will be determined based on your ability, experience and/or training in the following job elements:
- Ability to safely operate motor vehicles.
- Ability to keep the work area neat, clean and in order.
- Ability to interpret instructions (does not include reading blueprints).
- Ability to safely operate motor vehicles to perform engineering construction work without causing personal injury or property damage. This position also requires special qualifications that have been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as screen-out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the below screen out element will be rated not qualified.
- Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

The person tentatively selected for this position is subject to completion of a favorable background investigation. Failure to satisfy the preliminary background check will result in cancellation of the tentative job offer. Failure to satisfy the full investigation requirements may be grounds for termination, once you are placed in the position.
A valid driver's license is required for some positions. If you are selected for one of these positions you must be 18 years old and have a current driver's license.
Overnight travel may be required on a regular and recurring basis and employee will be required to obtain and use a government charge card, when travel is necessary.

If drug testing is required for this position, it will be provided at Government direction and expense. Once hired, you may also be subject to random drug testing during employment. This position is not eligible for Telework. **All positions may not be filled or they may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions are temporary and are expected to last for approximately 6 months. These positions have no promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade you must apply for the higher grade.

Participation in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program - Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles, which is deducted from bi-weekly earnings. Employees electing to continue coverage under the TCC provision will be responsible for the full premium amount plus a 2% administration fee.
